Paul Lay

Paul Lay (born July 22, 1984 in Orthez ) is a French jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Live and act

Lay comes from a family of musicians; his mother, a singer, took over his early musical education. He studied at the regional conservatory in Toulouse, then in jazz and improvisation at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris with Hervé Sellin , François Théberge , Glenn Ferris , Dré Pallemaerts and Riccardo Del Fra .

After graduating, Lay joined Riccardo Del Fra's quintet. In 2010 he released a first album with his own trio, Unveiling . In 2012 he moved to Ping Machine , Frédéric Maurin's group , where he replaced Benjamin Moussay.

On his second album Mikado (2014) he played in a quartet with saxophonist Antonin-Tri Hoang , double bass player Clemens van der Feen and his former teacher Dré Pallemaerts.

Together with video maker Olivier Garouste, he developed a video performance entitled Billie Holiday passionnément , which premiered in Nantes on the singer's 100th birthday . In 2017 Lay released the album Alcazar Memories (with singer Isabel Sörling and double bass player Simon Tailleu and Provencal songs and dances as a starting point). In addition, the album The Party was released , which was created in a trio with Dré Pallemaerts and Clemens van der Feen.

In 2018, Thanks a Million , a duo with Éric Le Lann , was released in honor of Louis Armstrong . In addition, he continues to work in the groups of Riccardo Del Fra , Géraldine Laurent , Éric Le Lann and Shauli Einav . He also accompanied Barbara Hendricks on International Jazz Day 2012 at UNESCO and recorded with the AUM Grand Ensemble .

Prizes and awards

Lay has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions (soloist prize at the La Défense jazz competition , prize at the Moscow International Piano Jazz Competition , the Martial Solal Competition and the 2007 Montreux International Piano Jazz Competition ). He is also a winner of the Meyer Foundation and the Mécénat Musical Société Générale .

His album Mikado won in 2014 the Grand Prix of the Académie Charles Cros for Best International Jazz Album of the Year. In 2016 he was awarded the Prix ​​Django Reinhardt as “best French jazz musician of the year”. He was also named Best Young French Jazz Talent of the Year in a Jazz Magazine poll of its critics.
