Paul de Leeuw

Paul Henri de Leeuw (born March 26, 1962 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch presenter , comedian , actor and singer . He is seen as extremely talented and has received numerous awards, but is also highly controversial because of his exceptional rudeness.

Life

De Leeuw was born in Rotterdam- IJsselmonde , grew up in a devout Protestant family with 2 siblings and lived in Rotterdam, Lekkerkerk and Krimpen aan den IJssel during his childhood . He finished his school education with the HAVO degree and began studying Dutch and social studies to become a teacher in Delft.

De Leeuw lives in a same-sex marriage with Stephan Nugter . You have adopted two children as a rainbow family.

Career

In 1983 he appeared for the first time at the Cameretten Cabaret Festival in Delft. The following year he moderated the festival.

In 1985 he appeared at the Koninklijk Theater Carré with his own play Stel moeder niet teleur and sang his - now best known - song Vlieg met me mee (Flieg mit mir), which was later released as a single.

In 1986 he was a radio presenter at KRO and, as a trouble-shooting aunt, Lieve Paul , he solved the relationship problems of his listeners.

From 1986 until today he has appeared regularly on Dutch television in various formats, first on NCRV as a co-presenter on the programs Snelbinder and Sterrenslag .

From 1990 he presented his own show De schreeuw van de Leeuw ( Dutch Roar of the Lion ) on the VARA radio station . His program on AIDS with René Klijn achieved particular fame . This show was later awarded the Rose d'Or in Montreux . His show about his disabled niece Margrietje was also widely discussed in public and awarded the JB Broekzprijs .

In the early 1990s there was a lot of discussion about his style and humor, as he was seen by many Dutch people as too rude and unsuitable for television. Many Dutch TV commentators spoke of "afzeiktelevisie" (Dutch. "Afzeiken" means "to get ready, to collapse")

In 1991 his album Voor U Majesteit (ndl. Für Sie, Majestät ) was released, which also contained the single Vlieg met me mee . In 1994 he released his biggest hit to date, Ik wil niet dat ever (ndl. I don't want you to lie ), which was number 1 for 9 weeks and was the best-selling single that year. Also in 1994 he played the leading role in the comedy series Seth & Fiona and was the presenter of the show Muilen tight! (Dutch shut up ).

In 1995 his first feature film, Filmpje ( little film ), was released. In 1996 the album Encore was released.

As one of the few Dutch artists, De Leeuw performed five evenings in a row at the sold out Ahoy together with Simone Kleinsma , Willeke Alberti , Bassie en Adriaan and Keesje .

In 2002 Paul de Leeuw switched from VARA to NCRV, where he was seen with a revised version of the game show Zo Vader, zo Zoon (ndl. Like father, like son ) and Herberg De Leeuw (ndl. Herberge De Leeuw ). The moderation of both programs did not correspond to the wishes of the broadcaster, they were discontinued. In the following year he switched back to VARA and hosted PaPaul ( Dutch father Paul ), a daily talk show.

From late 2003 to 2005, De Leeuw retired from the television business.

De Leeuw has been back since August 2005 and hosts the Saturday evening show Mooi! Weer de Leeuw (ndl. Class! Again de Leeuw ) or the summer variant Mooi Weer! de Leeuw (ndl. class weather! de Leeuw ). Also in 2005 came his music DVD De Leeuw brult (ndl. De Leeuw roars , literally the lion roars ).

His best-of album Mooi! Weer een CD was released in 2006. The show Mooi! Weer de Leeuw was placed on the prime-time spot of Nederland 1 . In 2006 he also hosted the New Year's Eve show Mooi jaar for the first time ! De Leeuw op oudejaarsavond , which over 2.2 million viewers saw.

In August 2007 he moderated the 200th edition of the popular program Zomergasten (ndl. Summer Guests ) for the broadcaster VPRO .

Its 25th stage anniversary in November 2008 was, among other things, a 12-hour marathon by Mooi! Weer De Leeuw celebrated. During the program, de Leeuw was surprised by the many colleagues he had worked with over the years. The show had an audience rate of 36.1%. There was also a DVD box under the title Een Kwart Eeuw De Leeuw (netherlands. A quarter of a century De Leeuw ).

The last broadcast of Mooi! Weer de Leeuw aired on May 31, 2009. On September 12th, 2009 he presented his new Saturday evening show Lieve Paul (netherlands. Dear Paul) for the first time , in which he answered questions from viewers alone or with the help of experts. On Sundays a summary ran under the title Lieve Paul PS .

His show De Tafel van 5 in 2009 was considered a flop .

Eurovision Song Contest

De Leeuw has been known as a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest since the mid-1990s . In 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2007 he hosted the program for the Dutch national preliminary round.

Despite the criticism he received for his performance, he was allowed to moderate again in 2007 and present the points.

criticism

The talented presenter and entertainer not only has a large fan base, but has also received a lot of criticism. Trouw wrote of him: “ He is humorous, direct, inventive, sometimes surprisingly gentle, but mostly sharp and unabashedly rough. "

  • The former Christian Democratic politician Willem Aantjes reported on the program Laat de Leeuw that de Leeuw had asked a girl of about thirteen whether she already had a boyfriend and had kissed her with his tongue.
  • De Leeuw had invited a woman into his program whose illegitimate father had belonged to the German occupation forces during World War II. He made fun of her fate and asked her if she had ever been shocked to see German characteristics in herself.
  • On the occasion of Prince Claus's death , de Leeuw is said to have commented inappropriately on the deceased. De Leeuw himself denies this. The program was not broadcast.
  • In 2002 he imitated Anneke Grönloh and portrayed her as an alcoholic and prostitute with sexually transmitted diseases. Grönloh was so shocked that she withdrew from show business. The singer, confronted with lyrics like “I was in Singapore, and Singapore was also in me”, was reminded of her difficult childhood in Asia during World War II and of the discrimination she suffered as a “half-blood” throughout her life.
  • In 2006 he caused a scandal at the Eurovision Song Contest. De Leeuw tried to upset the male presenter Sakis Rouvas during the live broadcast and alluded to his alleged homosexuality, which was discussed by the tabloids. Among other things, he tried to give him his cell phone number and said that the presenter duo Sakis Rouvas and Maria Menounos would remind him of Will & Grace . Rouvas took it with humor and joked.
  • A demonstrator wearing only a thong pushed his way into a live broadcast by de Leeuw in 2008. The protester with the pseudonym vegan streaker wanted to draw attention to animal abuse. De Leeuw was violent, pulled the protester onto his lap and finally tore off the thong.
  • De Leeuw tweeted on the occasion of a program about sexuality in old age that the woman accompanied there looked like a dildo that was used too often. He called women who had been looking for a partner on the show Boer zoekt vrouw "hopeless prostitutes".
  • In 2010 he tweeted on the occasion of what he thought was the boring wedding of the Swedish Crown Princess that he was longing for a black Saab. In a black Suzuki , a confused man tried to drive the Dutch royal family on Queen's Day in 2009. He killed seven people in the process.
