Paul von Haugwitz

Heinrich Paul Graf von Haugwitz and Freiherr von Klein-Obisch (born January 22, 1791 in Reichenbach , † September 8, 1856 in Dresden ) was a Prussian soldier, civil servant, landowner and writer.

Life

Paul von Haugwitz was born the son of the royal state and cabinet minister Count Christian von Haugwitz and his wife Johanna Katharina (born June 11, 1752 - February 9, 1832), a daughter of Friedrich Bogislav von Tauentzien . His siblings were:

He spent most of his youth in Berlin and from 1806 he was in Vienna for two years . During his studies at Heidelberg University , which he began in 1810, he joined the army in 1813 as a volunteer mounted hunter ( light cavalry ) to fight in the wars of liberation . A few months later he was promoted to officer and the king appointed him adjutant to his uncle, Lieutenant General Bogislav Friedrich Emanuel von Tauentzien . He fought in the campaigns of 1813 and 1814 and was awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, the Swedish Order of the Sword and the Russian Order of St. Vladimir for his service in the battles at Dennewitz, Jüterbog and the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig . In 1815 he took his leave as lieutenant of the cavalry and was appointed chamberlain . But when the campaign reopened in 1815 , he rejoined the army; In April 1818 he was transferred to the General Staff as a first lieutenant and assigned to the then lieutenant general Graf Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg and later to the then lieutenant general Freiherr Karl von Müffling . In June 1819 Paul von Haugwitz was bid farewell as Rittmeister .

By selecting the relevant items he was after his retirement from the army to the district of Opole circle selected, in which most of the Fideikommiss -Güter were his father. In 1820 his father moved to Italy because of the mild climate, so that Paul von Haugwitz gave up the office of district administrator and administered his father's property until in 1832, after the death of his father, he became the property of the Majorate Krappitz and Steinau, Peuke and Pannwitz came. In 1831 he was appointed major and leader of the second contingent.

In 1837 the estates elected him again to the district administrator of the Opole district. In 1843 he was adopted into retirement; in the same year he was promoted to lieutenant colonel .

His first marriage was to Countess Lucy von Malzan, and they had a son together:

  • Kurt von Haugwitz , royal chamberlain, prime lieutenant and member of the manor house, married to Lucie Caroline Amalie Adelheid Henriette Wilhelmine, b. Princess of Carolath-Schönaich.

In his second marriage, he was married to Henriette Sophie Constanze Princess von Schoenaich-Carolath (born April 11, 1801; † unknown) from September 10, 1819 .

From 1816 to 1821 Paul von Haugwitz published various lyrical and narrative poems in the volumes of Fouqué 's women's pocketbook and in various other almanacs . He is also known as a translator from English, such as Thomas Moore’s Love of Angels , 1829, and a number of works by George Gordon Byron in Valentin Adrian's edition, 1830.

Some of his lyrics were set to music by Ludwig van Beethoven .

Awards

For his use in the Wars of Liberation he received the Iron Cross II. Class, the Swedish Order of the Sword and the Russian Order of St. Vladimir

In January 1828 the king awarded him the Royal Prussian Order of St. John , making him a Knight of Honor of the order.

In 1838 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class.
