Paulo Morello (born Cornelius Paul Schmidkunz in Burglengenfeld on October 7, 1970 ) is a German jazz guitarist , composer and music producer .

Live and act

Morello studied jazz guitar as a major at the Meistersinger Conservatory in Nuremberg with Helmut Kagerer from 1992 to 1993 and from 1993 to 1995 at the University of Music in Mannheim with Frank Kuruc . This was followed by a one-year study visit to the New York New School with a major in jazz guitar with Jim Hall and Peter Leitch and additional lessons with Buster Williams , Jack Wilkins , Attila Zoller , Richie Beirach and George Garzone . From 1996 to 1998 he studied again at the Musikhochschule Mannheim , where he completed his academic studies with an artistic / pedagogical diploma examination. In addition, Morello took classes in workshops with Jerry Bergonzi , Mike Stern , Hal Galper , Jimmy Cobb , Frank Foster , Pat Martino , Tal Farlow , John Scofield and Karl Ratzer, among others .

In 2001 Morello began his international career with the project "Bossa Nova Legends", which he initiated and produced together with the Danish-German saxophonist Kim Barth . With this project he undertook in the following years u. a. with Leny Andrade and the singer Johnny Alf tours in Europe and South America. Here he guested z. B. in the Queen Elisabeth Hall / London Jazz Festival , in the Teatro Rival / Rio de Janeiro, at the Verona Jazz Festival / Italy, at the Vilnius Jazz Festival / Lithuania and at the San Javier Jazz Festival in Spain. This project was followed by a European tour with the organist Jimmy Smith's trio , tours and a CD production with Paul Kuhn and Greetje Kauffeld , engagements with Roberta Gambarini and a tour with the Kim Barth & Michael Mossman Sextet. In 2008 Morello presented his organ trio together with Jermaine Landsberger and Peter Less with the CD production Hammond Eggs . In 2011, the Night of Jazz Guitars project was followed by the presentation of a guitar quartet with Larry Coryell , Helmut Kagerer , Andreas Dombert and guest Philip Catherine at the Burghausen Jazz Week . In 2012 the album "Afternoon in Rio" was released, which Morello produced together with Tizian Jost and Erivelton Silva. Guest soloists are Hendrik Meurkens , Wolfgang Lackerschmid and Kim Barth.

Morello has been a lecturer at the Nuremberg University of Music since 1999 and teaches jazz guitar as a major instrumental subject. He also teaches the big band rhythm section and leads a Brazilian jazz combo.
