The Penola Strait is a 17.5 km long and 3 km wide strait off the Danco coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . It separates the mainland coast from the Argentine Islands , Petermann Island and Krogmann Island .
It was first traversed on February 12, 1898 by participants in the Belgica expedition (1897–1899) of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery . The Australian polar explorer John Rymill named it after the Penola , one of the two research vessels on the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937).
