Peter Abelsson (born July 14, 1977 in Nybro ) is a former Swedish football player . The defender made his career in Sweden and Norway.

Career

Career start in Sweden

Abelsson played at Nybro IF in his youth . In January 1999 he went to Trelleborgs FF . At the beginning of the millennium he was able to fight for a regular place in the club's central defense and in the 2001 relegation season he only missed one game of the season. He also remained loyal to TFF in the Superettan . After a ninth place in 2002, the team with players like Kristian Haynes or Mats Lilienberg managed to return to the Allsvenskan a year later as runner-up behind Kalmar FF . This season Abelsson was in all 30 games from kick-off to final on the field. Also in the first division season 2004 he was one of the regulars at TFF. However, the club had no chance in the Swedish elite series and rose directly from bottom of the table. After only two wins of the season against Landskrona BoIS on the fourth and against Hammarby IF on the sixth matchday and a subsequent series of twenty games without a win, the team was 17 points behind the saving bank after the last matchday.

Abelsson then left the club and moved within the Allsvenskan to the reigning champions Malmö FF . There he should close the gap that Daniel Majstorović had left after his move to the Dutch Eredivisie to FC Twente . However, the defender only stayed one season at MFF. After 18 missions at the side of Patrik Andersson , Olof Persson and Anders Andersson , he left the traditional Swedish club in January 2006.

Abroad in Norway

Swedish coach Tom Prahl , who moved from MFF to Viking FK , lured Abelsson to Norway, where he signed a three-year contract. With the seven-time Norwegian champion at the time, he was able to establish himself immediately in the defense. In his first year in Norway he only missed one game in the Tippeligaen and was able to maintain the league with the team around players like Mattias Asper , Peter Ijeh and Ragnvald Soma .

In the following years, however, he was unlucky: After an injury, Abelsson only made 15 league appearances in his second season in Norway and Abelsson injured his knee in preparation for the season in March 2008, so that coach Uwe Rösler had to do without him for a long time. In the summer, the club decided not to extend the player's expiring contract. He only returned to the squad in the fall, but did not play a game during the season.

Return to Sweden

In January 2009, Abelsson returned to Allsvenskan after five years at Trelleborgs FF. He signed a two-year contract with his new employer that ran until the end of 2010. At his first professional station he was able to establish himself straight away as a core force in the defense chain. In the following years he was increasingly prone to injuries and fell out several times, so that he could not permanently secure his regular place. Although he had only completed 18 league appearances in the 2010 season , he extended his contract for two seasons in November of that year. In the following season he came to 19 games in the top Swedish division, as the table penultimate he rose with the club at the side of Dennis Melander , Mattias Adelstam , Magnus Andersson and Marcus Pode in the second division. He stayed with the club again after relegation, but fell out with his teammate Tuomo Turunen at the beginning of the second division season in 2012 due to injury. Ultimately, he came to 19 second division games by the end of the season, but the club rose to the third division. He then announced the end of his career.
