Count Péter Esterházy de Galántha [ ˈpeːtɛr ˈɛstɛrhaːzi ] (born April 14, 1950 in Budapest ; † July 14, 2016 there ) was a Hungarian writer and essayist .

Life

Péter Esterházy came from a counts branch of the Esterházy family , a line of Hungarian magnates who were expropriated and oppressed under the communist regime. He first completed a degree in mathematics , worked as an IT specialist from 1974 to 1978 and then began to publish. After a series of stories and novels, he created a multifaceted Hungarian and European panorama in his main work Harmonia Caelestis based on the history of his family. After the publication of the work he found out that his father had worked with the communist Hungarian secret service . This revelation, which the descriptions in Harmonia Caelestis could not be based on, is dealt with in the follow-up work, Improved Edition .

At the beginning of 2010, Sigfrid Gauch raised the charge against Esterházy that he had taken over an entire chapter from his book Traces of the Father in the novel Harmonia Caelestis . Esterházy also made use of other works and only indicated this in a specially published marginalia volume. This involves the so-called collage technique , in which something new is created from parts of works by other authors and which, according to the judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court, is permissible for the use of texts in "collage form" in Germany.

Numerous works by Esterházy have been translated into German by the writers and translators Zsuzsanna Gahse and Terézia Mora - in some cases with the deliberate use of Austrianism , so that one could also speak of a translation into Austrian . The writer and translator Hans-Henning Paetzke has translated the following titles: Agnes , Literarisches Colloquium , Who is responsible for the safety of the lady? , The auxiliary verbs of the heart , introduction to beautiful literature (together with a collective of translators).

Esterházy received a DAAD scholarship in 1980 , was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin in 1996/1997 and was a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry and, since 1998, of the Academy of Arts (Berlin) , literature section.

Esterházy held the Tübingen poetics lectureship in Tübingen in the winter semester 2006/2007 together with Terézia Mora. In the 2011/2012 winter semester he was a writer and lecturer in world literature at the International Morphomata College at the University of Cologne .

In 2004 Esterházy wrote in the afterword to a German new edition of Dezső Kosztolányi's Esti stories: Kornél Esti - c'est moi , in 2010 he published his own reflections with Esti .

He had been married to Margit Reén since 1973 and had two sons and two daughters. His brother Márton Esterhazy , who is six years his junior, played for the Hungarian national team at the 1986 World Cup .

In September 2015, he announced that he had pancreatic cancer . He died on July 14, 2016.
