resume

Peter Matthiessen attended the Free Waldorf School in Stuttgart-Uhlandshöhe, studied human medicine in Marburg and the Washington State University St. Louis . He received his doctorate in 1971 on histometric investigations on the developmental dynamics of the post-kidney in rats . He completed further training as a specialist in neurology , psychiatry and psychotherapy in Herdecke , Dortmund and Marburg. In 1983 he co-founded the University of Witten / Herdecke (UW / H). From 1987 to 1993 he was a board member of the Free European Academy of Sciences (FEAW), a predecessor organization of the UW / H. In 1993 he became the first holder of the Gerhard Kienle Endowed Chair for Medical Theory and Complementary Medicine at the UW / H.

1986–1996, Matthiessen carried out the first academic inventory of complementary medicine in Germany on behalf of the German Federal Government ("unconventional methods of combating cancer (UMK)" and from 1994 "unconventional medical directions (UMR)") and was the German delegate of the from 1994 to 1998 ongoing EU project "Unconventional Medicine, COST - B4 - Program". He was one of the founders and later deputy spokesman for the "Dialog Forum Pluralism in Medicine", which was set up in autumn 2000 with the participation of the then President of the German Medical Association , Jörg-Dietrich Hoppe , which "advocates a fruitful exchange between conventional and complementary medicine ". In 2009 he retired and Peter Heusser was his successor on the chair . He was a member of the four-person executive board of the international research advisory board of the medical section of the School of Spiritual Science .

Positions

Peter Matthiessen campaigned for a pluralism of methods and theories in medicine. This was already a founding impulse for the University of Witten / Herdecke. He was of the opinion that individual cases, if they were presented stringently enough, would have generalization potential. In 2018 he wrote the statement Homeopathy and intellectual honesty in defense of homeopathy , where individual case observation is of particular importance . In it he wrote that "the state is constitutionally prohibited from privileging a certain scientific approach or a certain medical paradigm" and at the same time defended such a privilege for homeopathic medicinal products, which are exempt from the proof of an effect for registration. The numerous allegations against homeopathy critics contained in the text were rejected as unfounded by the Münsteraner Kreis and Information Network Homeopathy initiatives .
