Peter Paul Flosdorf (born July 10, 1928 in Siegen ) is a German psychologist , curative educator , theologian and systemic family therapist . Until 1993 he was head of the supra-regional counseling and treatment center (ÜBBZ), the psychotherapeutic counseling service and the specialist academy for curative education in Würzburg .

Life

Flosdorf was born as the youngest of six sons of the surgeon and head of the Siegen Municipal Hospital , Peter Flosdorf (1882–1935), and his wife Wilhelmine Flosdorf, née. Berken born. As a teenager, Peter Flosdorf was a group leader in the Catholic youth movement (New Germany), which was critical of the National Socialist youth organizations. Towards the end of the Second World War he was drafted as an anti-aircraft helper and was taken prisoner by the Americans in 1945. After graduating from high school in Siegen in 1947, Flosdorf studied Catholic theology in Paderborn , although the theological faculty was relocated to Bad Driburg Abbey at that time due to damage caused by the war . He completed his semester off in 1949 in Munich . There he was u. a. heavily inspired by Romano Guardini .

Flosdorf began a second degree in psychology and philosophy in Munich, among others with Philipp Lersch and Arnulf Däumling, at the Psychological Institute of the University of Munich. In 1952 he completed his studies in Catholic theology in Paderborn, and in 1954 he graduated from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a diploma.

In 1958, Peter Flosdorf obtained his doctoral thesis “About stuttering. A psychological and characterological examination of stuttering children and adolescents ”the doctorate of the Philosophical Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.

In February 1953, as a young psychologist and fellow of the Victor Gollancz Foundation, Flosdorf took over the social service of Catholic women. V. newly established curative educational observation station in Würzburg. The early days were characterized by post-war poverty, but also by a pioneering spirit, upheaval and optimism, and new developments. Peter Flosdorf has been an engine and designer of these developments in the field of youth welfare throughout his entire professional career. In the girls' home run by religious sisters, he had to assert himself against resistance with his ideas about what “welfare children” need for positive development.

Subsequently, he designed the inpatient aids for children and adolescents with behavioral problems and psychological disorders in the sense of a therapeutic home education, a concept that set standards for modern, qualified home education and still provides the framework for work in the therapeutic home Sankt Joseph to this day.

In the daily therapeutic work with children and adolescents, Peter Flosdorf developed a number of helpful and encouraging elements (such as the children's conference) and also the therapeutic educational game. This concept was first presented in 1964 at the 9th Federal Conference of the Association of Catholic Institutions for Home and Curative Education with a film presentation.

From the need for advice for families, Flosdorf developed the outpatient advice service and in 1955 laid the foundation stone for the establishment of the educational advice centers in Lower Franconia.

In addition to working with children, young people and their families, he devoted himself intensively to the qualification of employees and in 1966 founded the curative education seminar, one of the first training centers for curative teachers in Germany. Graduates from all over Germany have benefited to this day from this practice-oriented training, which focuses on remedial educational relationships.

In 1972 the Federal Ministry for Family and Health commissioned Peter Flosdorf with the conception and implementation of the traveling exhibition “Home Education in Transition” (see: Home Education - Home Planning. Documentation of an Exhibition in Frankfurt 1972).

In Würzburg, with the establishment of an open, structured play center ("Spieli") in a social hotspot (1974) and the establishment of a child and youth farm and its sponsoring association (1979), further traces of activity and creative development can be found.

In the differentiation of educational aids, Flosdorf continued to provide impetus for the development of the therapeutic day care center and the expansion of the Elisabeth Weber School into a support center with a focus on "emotional and social development".

His artistic and creative interest found expression in the curative educational interior design. The “Würzburg model” developed together with Wolfgang Mahlke for the interior design of the group rooms in kindergartens and homes found imitators in Germany.

Flosdorf took on a teaching position at the Psychological Institute of the University of Würzburg . He was also active in committees and associations as an advisor and co-designer of professional and socio-political developments. At board level, he played a key role in the restructuring of the Association for Home and Curative Education into the Federal Association of Catholic Institutions and Services for Educational Aid (BVkE). At the same time he was involved at the federal level in the Working Group for Educational Aid (AFET). Even after his retirement after 40 years of activity in 1993 and the resignation from a responsible position, he continued his lecturing, reviewing and consulting activities.

Peter Flosdorf is married to Ursula Flosdorf, b. Fisherman. The marriage entered into in 1955 had three children.
