Peter Schmidt began his career in 1964 in the youth of the then 1st amateur division, Sportfreunde Saarbrücken . This was followed by frequent appointments to the Saarland amateur team under coaches Jupp Derwall and Philipp Becker . In the 1970/71 season he reached the runner- up with the Sportfreunde and thus participated in the games for the German amateur championship . The young striker played in all four group matches against VfR Kaiserslautern (1: 1, 3: 0) and FC Gottmadingen (1: 4, 0: 2). In the 1973/74 season he finished 10th in the 1st Amateur League Saarland with his club and took part in the games for the regional cup with the association selection. The Saarland representation played with the attacker in the group stage against the Lower Rhine (0: 1), Middle Rhine (0: 1) and Bremen (1: 3).

For the 1974/75 season he moved to Borussia Neunkirchen in the then newly founded 2nd Bundesliga . Schmidt made his debut on the start of the round, August 3, 1974, in a 3-1 away win at VfR Mannheim in the 2nd Bundesliga. He was substituted on by Erwin Türk in the 60th minute and scored the 2-1 opening goal in the 80th minute alongside teammates such as Willi Ertz , Heinz Histing , Heinz-Jürgen Henkes , Ludwig Lang and Horst Schauß . Although the club had to relegate, Schmidt drew attention to himself as a striker with 11 hits in 37 league appearances. Among other things, he received two appointments to the student national team (1975 against Belgium and Uruguay ).

Before the season 1975/76 he moved to 1. FC Saarbrücken and was the 7th of last year directly master . He was one of the few regular players who played all games of the championship season. With ten goals, he was the team's third-best goalscorer behind Felix Magath and Ludwig Denz . In addition to Schmidt, the players Dieter Ferner , Manfred Cremer , Werner Greth and Horst Bender also came to the Ludwigspark . In the Bundesliga , Schmidt played six games in 1975/76, the last on November 27, 1976 in a 3-0 away defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach, before a serious knee injury interrupted his career for almost two years. It was only in the second half of the 1978/79 season that he got fit again and quickly became a regular at the then second division club 1. FC Saarbrücken. As a defensive midfielder , he scored six goals in 14 games. After the season Schmidt had to end his high-class career because of the after-effects of the injuries and let his career end in the amateur area at ASC Dudweiler .

Schmidt completed his training as a high school teacher (German, sociology, politics) during his football career , then worked for almost 20 years as a newspaper editor and has been back in school since 2001.
