Peter Seifert (born January 17, 1983 in Saxony ; † December 30, 2019 ; temporarily Peter Rodewald ) was a German long-distance and ultra runner .

Life

Peter Seifert started running at the age of 13. After five years, now a competitive athlete , he stopped shortly before graduating from high school . It wasn't until four years later in August 2005, when Peter Seifert was practicing martial arts ( Taekwondo ), that a friend persuaded him to start running again.

After completing his professional training as a medical assistant , Peter Seifert began his bachelor's degree in psychology in 2007 , which he completed in summer 2010 and extended with a master's degree. In 2009 he became German runner-up in the marathon at the Gutenberg Marathon in Mainz with a time of 2:23:16 h .

A year later (2010) Peter Seifert won the German championship over 50 km road in Bottrop with a time of 2:57:59 h and defended this title in Marburg in 2011 with a time of 2:52:26 h . The German record set up over 50 km was only improved in 2016 by Paul Schmidt to 2:49:06 h .

During a training camp on Lanzarote in preparation for the German championships over 100 km , Peter Seifert was hit by a car and seriously injured during a training run in 2011. Due to a traumatic brain injury , he had to be placed in an artificial coma for over two months . Due to memory loss, he cannot remember the time between the accident in March 2011 and July 2011. In the same year, Peter Seifert was named Sportsman of the Year 2011 by the German Ultramarathon Association (DUV). After a nine-month hospital stay and successful rehab in Bad Tennstedt , he competed in a running competition for the first time in February 2016 at the Marburger Lahntallauf , where he had run the last competition before his accident.

Peter Seifert was married with two children and last lived in Rotenburg an der Fulda . In 2018 he initiated a counseling service for patients with traumatic brain injury and for relatives of people with organ brain disorders. With the experiences from his own medical history, he wanted to support those affected, their families and friends in coping with this difficult life situation. Seifert was physically active in climbing. He was co-founder and 2nd chairman of the Rotenburg running team.

During his sporty comeback in 2016, Peter Seifert was accompanied by a camera team from the MDR . The 30-minute documentary about patients with traumatic brain injury is entitled The Long Way Back and was shown on MDR television as part of the series "Exact - The Story".
