Sir Peter David George Terry , GCB , AFC , QCVSA , KStJ , (born October 18, 1926 in Ramsgate , Kent - † December 19, 2017 in Aylesbury , Buckinghamshire ) was a British General ( Air Chief Marshal ) of the Royal Air Force (RAF ), most recently Deputy Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces of NATO in Europe DSACEUR ( Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe ) between 1981 and 1984 and Governor of Gibraltar from 1985 to 1989 . During his tenure as governor of Gibraltar signed it in 1988, due to which the Special Forces SAS a document ( Special Air Service ) three activists of the Irish Republican Army overwhelmed (IRA) and killed. In 1990, the IRA assassinated him in revenge.

Life

Military training, officer and staff officer uses

After attending school in 1945, Terry joined the RAF Regiment , the Royal Air Force (RAF) unit for the protection and defense of military airfields, as a rifleman . On July 17, 1946 he was accepted as a lieutenant (pilot officer) as part of an emergency commission (Emergency Commission) in the RAF regiment. Subsequently, his term of service was extended by four years on May 29, 1947 as part of an Extended Commission and he was promoted to First Lieutenant (Flying Officer) on July 17, 1948 . On October 1, 1950, he was finally accepted as a professional soldier (Permanent Commission) in the RAF Regiment and promoted as such on July 17, 1952 to Captain (Flight Lieutenant) . In 1953 he completed pilot training and on April 30, 1956 , he was transferred to the RAF's General Duties Branch as a flight lieutenant . In 1959 he completed the 156th flight instructor course at the Central Flying School ( CFS ) and was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service (QCVSA) for the first time on June 13, 1959 .

After his promotion to Major (Squadron Leader) on July 1, 1959, Terry became a QFI (Qualified Flying Instructor) flight instructor at a flight training school FTS (Flying Training School) . In 1962 he attended the Royal Air Force Staff College Bracknell and received a QCVSA again for his services on June 2, 1962. On April 20, 1964 he was transferred to the headquarters of the RAF Far East (RAF Far East Air Force) at the RAF Changi base in Singapore and there on July 1, 1964 promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (Wing Commander) . He then took over on July 27, 1966 post as commander ( Commanding Officer ) of No. 51 Squadron RAF and received the Air Force Cross (AFC) on June 8 , 1968 and his promotion to Colonel (Group Captain) on July 1, 1968 . As such, on November 11, 1968, he became the commander of the RAF El Adem air base in Libya and on June 19, 1970 director of the operational planning department in the air force staff, before he became head of the RAF's advance planning department in 1971.

Promotion to Air Chief Marshal and Governor of Gibraltar

On July 1, 1972 Terry was promoted to Brigadier General ( Air Commodore ) and on July 1, 1974 to Major General (Air Vice Marshal) and was on January 1, 1975 Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). On March 22, 1975 he moved to the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Forces of NATO in Europe SHAPE ( Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe ) , where he succeeded Air Vice Marshal Michael Beetham as Assistant Chief of Staff for Planning and Policy (Plans and Policy Division) and held this position until his replacement by Air Vice Marshal Keith Williamson on March 26, 1977. On his return he was on March 26, 1977 Lieutenant General ( Air Marshal ) transported and released Air Marshal David Evans as Vice Chief of Air Staff ( Vice Chief of the Air Staff ) from. On December 31, 1977 he was beaten Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) and from then on carried the suffix "Sir". On January 30, 1979, Air Marshal John Nicholls assumed the post of Vice Chief of the Air Staff.

Terry, in turn, took over from Air Marshal John Stacey as Supreme Commander of the Air Force in Germany ( RAF Germany ) on April 30, 1979 and as such was also the commander of the 2nd Tactical Air Force ( RAF Second Tactical Air Force ) . He held this post until February 2, 1981 and was then replaced by Air Marshal Jock Kennedy . He was then on February 2, 1981 as the renewed successor to Air Chief Marshal John Stacey, initially Deputy Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces in Central Europe AFCENT ( Allied Forces Central Europe ) and was promoted to General (Air Chief Marshal) on March 1, 1981 . Already on April 9, 1981 he replaced General Jack Harman as Deputy Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces of NATO in Europe DSACEUR ( Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe ) and remained in this post until he retired from active military service on October 18, 1984, whereupon General Edward Burgess became his successor. On December 31, 1982 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB).

On November 19, 1985 Terry replaced Admiral David Williams as governor of Gibraltar and as commander in chief of the armed forces in Gibraltar and held these offices until his replacement by Admiral Derek Reffell in December 1989. On January 1, 1986, he became Knight of Justice of the Order of Saint John (KStJ).
