life and work

Peter Wunderli studied Romance and English in Zurich , Aix-en-Provence , Rome and Oxford . a. with Reto R. Bezzola , Georges Poulet , Konrad Huber , Gerold Hilty and Heinrich Schmid . He received his doctorate under Gerold Hilty in 1963. Until 1967 he worked as an assistant at the University of Zurich and then as a teacher for French and Italian teachers at the Winterthur Cantonal School . In 1968 he completed his habilitation in Zurich.

In 1970 he was offered the professorship for Romance studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , in 1976 he switched to the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf , where he taught until his retirement in 2003. Since 1998 he has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences .

His main areas of research were the work of Ferdinand de Saussure , intonation research and Central French .

Wunderli led investigations into the French Subjonctif through, but was referring to the Spanish subjunctive and the Italian congiuntivo in his reflections with one. For him, the subjunctive is the "mode of partial update" which was shown in the following hierarchy:

  • Infinitive so semantem plus indication of verb; as a zero update
  • Participle so semantem plus indication of verb plus (action status) Accompli / Accomplissement; as a minimal update
  • Subjunctive therefore semantem plus indication of verb plus (action status) Accompli / Accomplissement plus personnel structure; as a partial update
  • Indicative therefore semantem plus indication of verb plus (action status) Accompli / Accomplissement plus personnel structure plus tense structure; as a full update

He differentiates between four levels of verbal updating, with each higher level being given a feature. Wunderli understands the “action stand” to mean the contrast between deformations that express the development of a process (Accomplissement) and those that mark its development (Accompli).
