Petre Solomon (born February 15, 1923 in Bucharest ; died October 28, 1991 there ) was a Romanian writer and translator.

Life

Petre Solomon was unable to complete school due to anti-Semitic racial laws in Romania. In April 1944 he managed to emigrate to Palestine . There he worked in a kibbutz , but returned to Romania disaffected in August 1946 and studied English at the University of Bucharest . Like Paul Celan , then still Paul Ancel, he worked for the publishing house Cartea Rusă, and the two became a lasting friendship. For the friend's sake, Celan wrote a few poems in Romanian. On May 2, 1947, Solomon's translation of the poem death fugue (initially still death tango ), agreed with Celan, appeared under the title Tangoul morții in the journal Contemporanul . After Celan's escape in 1948, he broke contact out of political opportunity until 1957 and then again from 1958 to 1962, which Celan did not resent his friend. After 1966 he visited Celan several times in Paris.

Solomon initially worked at Cartea Rusă and for the Agerpres press agency until he was dismissed in 1952 during political cleansing in Stalinist Romania. From then on he worked as a freelance writer. In 1954 he published his first volume of poetry Lumina zilei . He has translated poems by Milton, Shakespeare , Byron, Shelley, Victor Hugo , Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Celan and prose works by Balzac, Charles Dickens , Walter Scott , Herman Melville , Mark Twain , Joseph Conrad , Jack London , Joseph Kessel , Ray Bradbury , Graham Greene , Evelyn Waugh . His biographical and literary monographs dealt with writers such as John Milton , Mark Twain, Henry James , Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Celan.

In 1981 he received the Translation Prize from the Romanian Writers' Association. He was married to the painter and art historian Yvonne Hasan (1925–2016). One son is the film director Alexandru Solomon .
