Pfaffenhausen (Spessart) is a district of the municipality of Jossgrund in the Hessian Main-Kinzig district .

Geographical location

The state-recognized resort is located between the towns of Oberndorf and Lettgenbrunn, which also belong to the Jossgrund, about two kilometers from the Bavarian border in the Hessian Main-Kinzig district at an altitude of about 350 m. Two well-known trading routes from the Middle Ages, the Birkenhainer Strasse and the Eselsweg, are very close by . Around 1,000 people live in Pfaffenhausen on Landstrasse 3199 .

history

Pfaffenhausen was probably founded around the year 800 by monks (priests). The place is mentioned for the first time in writing as "Phafenhusun" in 1059 in the deed of the wild ban of Emperor Heinrich IV.

Until 1313 Pfaffenhausen belonged to the Lords of Jazza, who sold this property to Kurmainz in 1541 . The Thirty Years' War did not spare Pfaffenhausen either. Arson, looting and the plague caused the population to drop dramatically. Only about 15 families are said to have survived. In 1700 the place had around 120 inhabitants again, in 1712 a small chapel was even built on the place where you will later find the old school and today a small department store.

In 1725 a large part of the village including the chapel burned down. The village had to be completely rebuilt with the exception of about three houses, and the school mentioned earlier replaced the chapel. From 1814 Pfaffenhausen belonged to Bavaria after the wars of freedom . At that time, agriculture and cattle breeding were the only sources of income alongside the use of wood from the Spessart Forest. In 1866 there was another change of ownership, the village now belonged to Prussia with the district office of Orb and Gersfeld . In 1921 a new church was built, financed by donations .

The municipalities of Pfaffenhausen, Oberndorf and Burgjoss merged voluntarily on December 31, 1971 as part of the regional reform of the State of Hesse to form the "Jossatal" municipality . On July 1, 1974, the municipality of Lettgenbrunn followed by state law and with it another name change to the municipality of "Jossgrund".

In the summer of 1973 the new church in Pfaffenhausen was consecrated after the renovation. The community built a morgue in the adjacent cemetery. The former elementary school was converted into a two-group kindergarten and expanded to three group rooms around 1996. In September 1993 the spacious new fire station in Austraße was put into operation. In the course of the village renewal, the no longer used former bank building with warehouse was handed over to the community by the Raiffeisenbank free of charge, converted into a village community center, known as the "village barn", and inaugurated in May 2002 with the help of the population. In 2009, on the occasion of the 950th anniversary, a historic village festival will take place on June 6th and 7th under the banner "Experience 950 years of Phafenhusun".
