Along with Burgjoss , Lettgenbrunn and Pfaffenhausen, Oberndorf is one of 4 districts of the Jossgrund community in the Hessian Main-Kinzig district and the seat of administration. The state-approved German resort with 590 households and about 1650 inhabitants is located about 70 km northeast of Frankfurt am Main in the border area of ​​the Bavarian and Hessian Spessart . history

A church in the upper village is first found in a document from 1167 when there is talk of a basilica in Jazaha . Oberndorf is first mentioned in documents in the man book of the Counts of Hanau from 1404. Another documented mention of Oberndorf can be found in 1444 when the Lords of Thüngen sold their estate "on the Jossa" without the parish seat of Oberndorf and its church to Hans von Selling huts at home. From 1540 Oberndorf was owned by the Archbishopric of Mainz . During the Thirty Years' War , the place and church were almost completely destroyed in 1634. In 1940 people were evacuated to Oberndorf due to the bombing, including the painter Alf Bayrle and his son, the later painter Thomas Bayrle , both of whom stayed until 1958.

On December 31, 1971, Oberndorf, together with Burgjoss and Pfaffenhausen, formed the new municipality of Jossatal as part of the regional reform in Hesse . This was on July 1, 1974 with the community Lettgenbrunn powerful state law the new municipality Jossgrund together .

  • The St. Martinskirche with its interior and the nave and the organ is worth seeing. The original church already existed in the early Middle Ages . Around 1658 the church, which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War , was rebuilt under the von Thüngen family . It was rebuilt in 1891 and its present form was given by a new building that was completed in 1952.
  • The town hall of Jossgrund, which was moved into in 1990, is located in the center of the village. It is not only an administrative but also a cultural center. The large hall is often used for all kinds of events - from trade shows to concerts or home evenings for local clubs.
  • The amateur theater “Inkognito” made up of local residents appears seasonally in the cabaret “Die Fabrik”. The building, erected in 1952, initially housed a cigar factory, then from 1956 to 1963 a clothing factory, then typewriter parts were manufactured in it (1964–1987) and finally it was the outsourcing of a Gelnhausen rubber factory. Since 1990 it has served as a cabaret.
