history

Burgjoss is the oldest part of Jossgrund and was first mentioned in the year 850 in the property register of the Fulda monastery as a Fulda property "an der Jazaha" (Jossa), but without an exact location. The current community name Jossgrund is based on the name of the former Hanau office Joßgrund .

The "Jazaha" castle on the Jossa , one of the oldest in the entire Spessart, was the seat of the Burgjoss court and was the secular center of the region for a long time. It was originally a castle-like wooden structure that rested on stilts and was surrounded by a moat. Around 1160 century, a sandstone castle was built instead of the wooden structure. The castle belonged to a sideline of the Lords of Steckelberg, who also called themselves Jasza , and served to control a trade route. In 1176 Fulda enfeoffed the Lords of Jossa with castle and court, but when they settled on Bergstrasse in the 13th century , their goods were gradually sold. Thus, the castle and court changed hands several times. In 1451 half belonged to the Counts of Hanau-Münzenberg , the other part belonged to the Lords of Thüngen and von Hutten . Over time, the von Hutten acquired the entire village, but sold their entire property in the Jossa valley in 1541 to the Archbishopric of Mainz .

Under the government of the Archbishop of Mainz Daniel Brendel von Homburg , the castle was expanded into a Renaissance moated castle around 1573 . As " Kellerey Burgjoßa" it remained the administrative center in the Jossatal, with the villages of Burgjoss, Mernes, Oberndorf and Deutelbach. With the secularization of 1803 the Jossgrund came to the newly created Principality of Aschaffenburg , in 1810 to the Napoleonic Grand Duchy of Frankfurt , in 1814 to Bavaria, 1867 to Prussia, and finally in 1945 to Hesse.

On December 31, 1971, Burgjoss formed the new municipality of Jossatal together with Oberndorf and Pfaffenhausen. This was 1 July 1974 at powerful state law with Lettgenbrunn for greater community Jossgrund together .

Attractions

The townscape is shaped by its historical landmark, the former moated castle. The Renaissance moated castle was expanded in its current form between 1541 and 1573 under Daniel Brendel von Homburg , Archbishop and Elector of Mainz . From 1814 the castle served as a royal Bavarian forestry office, from 1875 as the Prussian forestry office in Burgjoss, and from 1919 as the Hessian forestry office.

The "green heart of Burgjoss", the Burgwiesenpark established in 1973, is attached to the castle. The extensive complex with its well-tended lawns and colorful flower beds offers both relaxation through the walking paths and leisure opportunities through a playground with a beach volleyball field. It includes, among other things, a mini golf course , open-air chess and a Kneipp facility . The castle pond supplies trout for local gastronomy. There are numerous signposted hiking routes around the village along the Jossa and in the nearby forest.

In addition, the place is characterized by the Catholic church "In honor of the precious blood", built in the style of the Béton Brut at the end of the 1960s. From the outside, the building is reminiscent of the simplicity of the Romanesque; inside the room is designed with different levels of brightness.
