history
Already in 1214 a chapel was built on the basis of documents from the Rott monastery at the current location of the church. The Gothic building was documented in 1445 and the chapel was expanded. The baroque reconstruction of the church was carried out in 1686 according to plans by the builder Lorenzo Sciasca from Graubünden . The nave was extended to the west from 1852 to 1858, and the vaults were raised. The church was consecrated in 1858. The interior was repainted in 1889/90 by Virgil Groder . In 1954/55 the church was redesigned according to plans by Josef Lackner and Robert Wurzer. In 1984 the church was re-baroque by Peter Schuh .
location
The parish church is located in the elevated district of Kirchweg and is surrounded by the cemetery and the baroque Widum .
architecture
The Gothic baroque church with a slim proportioned building comprises a four- bay nave with a steep gable roof , which is hipped on the west side behind the gable facade. Due to the additions of the tower and sacristies in the exterior, the unconventional outline of the polygonal choir does not come into its own. The slender church tower is attached to the north side of the choir and is divided from the bell storey by large round arched sound windows with cornices , over which it wears a pointed gable helmet .
The west facade has broad proportions and an emphasis in the central axis. The two-zone structure of the longitudinal walls has segmental arched windows .
The interior of the church is heavily lighted and includes a yoke-like structure as well as the barrel vault with short stitch caps, which is provided with straps over pilasters and an illusionistic ceiling painting of individual dome yokes. In the west there is a double gallery over conical pillars with profiled capitals.
Furnishing
The former side altar leaves Coronation of Mary and Peter were made by Simon Benedikt Faistenberger in 1754. Joseph Haid created the statue of the Good Shepherd with reclining Jesus child in the 19th century. The vault frescoes painted Wolfram Köberl in the years 1982/83 and symbolizes water as a basic theme.
Bells
In the church tower there are four bells that were cast in 1948 by the Oberascher bell foundry in Salzburg and are tuned in the tone sequence of 1 –f 1 –as 1 –b 1 . The total weight of the bells is approx. 4000 kilograms, the big bell alone weighs around 2000 kilograms.
