The parish church of Castelrotto in the diocese of Bozen-Brixen is the deanery church of the municipality of Castelrotto and is consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul .

history

The Kastelruther Church was first mentioned in a document in 1190. The Petrus Patronage suggests that its origins could go back to the early Middle Ages and that it was a few centuries old when it was first mentioned.

Today's church, also known as the “Dom auf dem Berge” (cathedral on the mountain), was planned by the Viennese court building advisor in the classical Viennese engineering style from 1838–1845. Construction began in 1846. The Rattenberg master mason Johann Wolf and the foreman Josef Scheiring from Zirl were involved in the work. The carpenter work was done by Johann Heufler from Castelrotto. The total cost was 57,158 guilders. In 1849 the new parish church was completed and consecrated on October 21 by the Trento bishop Johann Nepomuk von Tschiderer . The rectangular interior is divided into three naves by six pillars . The length is 50 m, the width 22.5 m and the height 16 m.

Interior

Oil painting by Franz Sebald Unterberger at the entrance to the church

At the entrance to the left under the gallery hangs a painting by Franz Sebald Unterberger depicting the veneration of Our Lady by Saint Nicholas . On the right hangs a baroque portiuncula indulgences with Mary, Christ in heaven and St. Francis . On the south wall hang pictures of Saint Paul falling from his horse and a picture of the handing over of the keys to Saint Peter attributed to the painter Eduard Burgauner .

The main altar with column structure and neo-Romanesque round gable bears the altarpiece, depicting the Assumption of Mary into heaven, by the Swiss painter Melchior Paul von Deschwanden from 1851. In the round gable there is a wooden relief of the Coronation of Mary by Johann Rifesser from 1887. On the sides the baroque statues of Saints Peter and Paul from the workshop of Martin Vinazer stand . The side walls of the presbytery are covered with huge frescoes of the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul and with frescoes of Abel and Melchizedech .

Other side altars are adorned with altar leaves from Deschwanden depicting Saint Agnes, Saint Joseph and Saint Sebastian. On the Agnes altar is a painting, signed " Martin Knoller pinxit 1754", depicting Saint Nepomuk .

The vaults are painted with groups of paintings, including the church fathers, the divine virtues, the patrons of the subsidiary churches Saint Valentine, Saint Vigilius, Saints Catherine and Mary Magdalene, the four evangelists and the four great prophets of the Old Covenant ( Isaiah , Jeremiah , Ezekiel and Daniel ).

The wall paintings of the nave were created by Jonas Ranter (1860–1931) and Franz Burger in 1893, those in the choir by Ranter, Lackner from Kirchberg in Tirol and Max Vogt from Bavaria in 1898. The employees were Eduard Burgauner from Castelrotto and Ignaz Stolz from Bozen .

The classical church tower

The old Gothic church tower and the eight bells fell victim to a village fire in 1753. A new tower was built between 1756 and 1758 according to the plans of the Bressanone master mason Simon Rieder. The church tower in classicist style measures 11 m in the square and is 82 m high. It stands in front of the main facade and separated from the church, as is often the case with churches in Veneto ; in South Tyrol, however, this is a rarity. The onion dome was built in 1780 according to the plans of Georg Singer from Brixen. Nine bells hang in the bell house. Eight of these were made by the Adda foundry in Crema in 1922 . The smallest, "The Little Death of the Valley", has existed since 1763, while the remaining eight fell victim to the First World War .

The tower clock from 1754 was made by the Val Gardena watchmakers Mathias and Peter Alneider.
