The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a listed church building in Villmar an der Lahn in the Limburg-Weilburg district in Hesse .
prehistory
Villmar first appears in a document in 1053: Emperor Heinrich III. gave his royal court Vilimar "with all accessories" to the Benedictine abbey of St. Eucharius (later St. Matthias ) in Trier. Confirmations of this donation from the 12th century describe the manor and parish of Villmar with their branch churches in Arfurt , Oberbruch , Wenigenvillmar (today Runkel / Schadeck ) and Weyer , as well as another 10 places or farms. The patronage of St. Peter ( Cathedra Petri , like the Trier Cathedral ) speaks for the old age of the Villmar church, which was a direct Trier foundation from the 7th / 8th centuries. Century could be. The Villmarer villages Aumenau and Weyer are also mentioned in 764 and 790 respectively. In the late Middle Ages, St. Matthias was added as a second patron. At the beginning of the 18th century there was a change to the double patronage of St. Peter and Paul and the Pantrontsfest was moved to June 29th.
In a document from 1281, the Villmar parish church is called "basilica", which indicates its size and importance. It appears in outline on a site map from 1699 and on a site view around 1740 as a multi-aisle building with a tower on the side, similar in shape to the late Romanesque St. Jonhannes-Balisika in Lahr in the Westerwald . In addition to the main altar of St. Peter, there was a cross altar and three other altars, which were consecrated to the Mother of God , St. Matthias and St. James and the 10,000 martyrs.
History and architecture
The church was built in 1746–1749 under the direction of Thomas Neurohr , who comes from Tyrol and resides in Boppard on the Rhine, in place of a late Romanesque church known as “basilica” in 1282 . It is a large five-bay hall church with buttresses and a flat groin vault . The slightly narrower choir with a yoke and 5/8 end is in front of the tower, whose baroque onion dome was renovated in the neo-Gothic style in 1884 after a lightning strike .
In 1957 there was a choir-like extension to the west by the architect Paul Johannbroer from Wiesbaden . The church, including the gallery, offers space for around 500 people.
Furnishing
Inside there are rich late baroque furnishings (1760–1764) from the Hadamar school of sculpture (Johann Thuringian, Jakob Wies) as well as works made from local Lahn marble from the 18th and 19th centuries. The St. James altar, which is now baroque, was named Jakobus and Matthias in 1491 -Altar mentioned. The celebration altar and ambo made of French sand-lime brick were artistically designed by sculptor Walter Schmitt (Villmar) in the 1980s and 1990s. During the renovation in 1988/1989, two new chapels were created under the gallery in front of the rear wall, which house the crucifixion group from the late 15th century and the Way of the Cross. The communion benches made of Lahn marble also found a new place there.
organ
The baroque organ was built in 1754–1755 by Johann Christian Köhler from Frankfurt . Modifications were carried out in 1885–1886 by the Keller brothers from Limburg and in 1932 by Johannes Klais from Bonn . In 1974 Johannes Klais rebuilt the organ again using valuable historical pipes. The work has 27 registers on two manuals and a pedal. The baroque prospectus has been preserved.
