geography

The horse mountain is located in the southern edge of the Golden Mark between the Duderstadt districts of Gerblingerode , Immingerode and Tiftlingerode directly on the former inner-German border and today's Lower Saxony- Thuringia border. To the southeast is the Thuringian Teistungen . The mountain is bordered by the Hahle in the east and its tributary Muse in the north and northwest, along with its tributary Große Icke in the southwest. Foothills of the horse mountain are in the north of the Kesperberg (approx. 240 m) and in the south of the Köterberg (approx. 245 m). In terms of nature, the mountain belongs to the Duderstädter basin within the Eichsfeld basin . The geological basis of the mountain consists of middle and lower red sandstone .

Nature and tourism

The wooded area is located in the conservation area "Untereichsfeld" of the district of Göttingen , the eastern and southern areas of the mountain are also used for agricultural purposes. In addition to oriole , tawny owl and long-eared owl, there is also a small population of the dormouse . The area is densely developed for tourism . The Grenzlandweg belonging to the Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld in Teistungen is part of the well-developed network of hiking trails . This leads along old facilities of the GDR border troops and, after a short section in Lower Saxony, runs back to the directly adjacent Thuringia . In addition, a fitness trail, a forest nature trail, a children's playground, a barbecue area with a shelter and a roofed table and bench group offer further opportunities for recreation. Directly on the mountain is the forest inn "Zur Schöne Aussicht" with a wide view to the north towards Thuringia. At the foot of the mountain near Gerblingerode is the "Ferienparadies Pferdeberg", a holiday resort built by the Kolping Society in 1983 .

history

Horse observatory

In the Middle Ages, the horse station was located on the highest point of the horse mountain . As part of the Duderstädter Landwehr , it was part of the city's defense system. It was first mentioned in 1445 in the city's account book ( Annale ) as a horse warde . It was probably built at the end of the 14th century when Duderstadt was in a feud with Hans von Osterode . With the help of fire signals, the tower keeper of the St. Cyriakus Church could be alerted in case of danger , so that the city could be given sufficient time to initiate defensive measures. Today only the remnants of the Wall-Graben-Anlage are evidence of its existence. This was declared a natural monument as early as 1937 with the group of trees on it .

Inner German border

The district boundary between Teistungen and Gerblingerode / Immingerode in the southern part of the Pferdeberg formed the boundary between the Prussian province of Saxony and the Kingdom of Hanover after 1814 and the province of Hanover from 1866 . On September 1, 1945, there was an exchange of territory between the Soviet and British occupation zones, presumably as part of a border straightening, from the Pferdeberg to the Lindenberg in the east. With the later expansion of the border installations by the GDR, this section of the inner German border also became impenetrable for people. After reunification in 1990, when the Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld was founded , parts of the former border installations on the Pferdeberg were preserved for posterity and can be viewed along the Grenzlandweg .

Border incident on the horse mountain

On August 14, 1964, a border incident occurred in the area of the area exchange on the Pferdeberg. Border soldiers of the GDR went to the territory of the FRG and tried to change the course of the border by smashing border posts. When the Federal Border Guard intervened, the border posts were removed and the area secured.

Horse mountain tower

Another landmark of the mountain is the 14 meter high horse mountain tower . It was built by the city of Duderstadt and handed over to its current form on November 22, 1984. It was used to observe the nearby border between East and West Germany. It was also used by the Federal Border Police . But primarily it was used for tourist information. Until the opening of the border , commemorative events took place in his vicinity every year on the Day of German Unity on June 17th. The horse mountain tower replaced an observation post right next to it, which was set up in 1948 by German customs officers to monitor the border. From 1956 this was also used by Federal Border Police officers stationed in Duderstadt and expanded by them into a refuge. After the border incident on August 14, 1964, it was also provided with a viewing platform. In 1952 the horse mountain cross was erected next to the refuge. The horse mountain tower now stands on the former place of the cross, the cross has been moved to another location.
