The Gates of Paradise is a British feature film from 1968. It is the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jerzy Andrzejewski , who also worked on the script.
action
The film takes place in 1212 . Jacob the Shepherd has a vision. Only innocent children can deliver Jerusalem from the unbelievers. Jakob then organized a children's crusade . A monk returning from Jerusalem joins the crusade. He takes confession from the children and has to establish that religious motives are not the only reason for the young people to join the crusade. Some are very worldly in nature. Alexander and Bianca are both in love with Jakob. Alexander has to learn that Duke Ludwig, his adoptive father, is the murderer of his parents. The Duke is also in love with Jacob, and Alexander manages to get Jacob to turn away from the Duke after learning of his dark story.
After the monk Jacob has accepted the confession, he is convinced that it cannot be God's will to send the children on a crusade organized by Jacob, and that the crusade must therefore fail. But Jacob cannot stop the children's crusade and is left behind by the children.

Reviews
“Not political or religious reasons, but an unfulfilled homoerotic love triggers a medieval children's crusade that ends in death and misery. ... a gloomy study of fanaticism, the longing for salvation and belief in authority - permeated by a fatalistic understanding of history. "
