Philipp Friedrich Hoffmann (born April 27, 1823 in Darmstadt , † February 19, 1887 in Flensburg ) was a Prussian major general and commander of Sonderburg-Düppel .

Life

His parents were the grand-ducal Hessian subadjutant a. D. Georg Hoffmann († 1870) and his wife Elisabeth, née Schmidt († 1864).

Military career

After attending the secondary school in Darmstadt, Hoffmann joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment (Grand Duke) of the Grand Ducal Hessian Army on April 27, 1839 as a musketeer . In mid-March 1846 he was transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment (Prince Carl) while being promoted to lieutenant . From November 1850 until his transfer as first lieutenant to the 1st Infantry Regiment (Leib Guard Regiment) in early April 1854, Hoffmann was the officer in charge of the investigation. On August 13, 1861 he was entrusted with the command of the 2nd Rifle Company of his regiment, promoted to captain in mid-October 1861 and appointed chief of this company on February 9, 1864 .

In this capacity Hoffmann took part in the battles near Frohnhofen , Aschaffenburg and Gerchsheim during the war against Prussia and was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous with Swords on September 18, 1866 . He rose to major on August 17, 1867 and at the same time became commander of the II. Battalion that he led in the war against France in 1870/71 at Vionville , Gravelotte , Noisseville , Briare and Orleans and before Metz .

Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, the Military Merit Cross and the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Ludwig for his work , Hoffmann was awarded the status of battalion commander with a patent from May 30, 1868 in the course of the military convention on January 1, 1872 Association of the Prussian Army taken over. Hoffmann married Auguste Bernhard († 1868) in Darmstadt on October 10, 1854, with whom he had the children Lina (* 1858), Karl (* 1861) and Friedrich (1866–1867).

After the death of his first wife, he married Maria Lotz († 1876) in Gießen on May 12, 1874 . On January 22, 1881 he married Emilie Labrasse for the last time.
