Pazin ( Italian Pisino ) is a small town in Croatia .

geography

The city is located in the Croatian part of Istria in the Istria County . The place Pazin has 4386 inhabitants, the municipality, which also includes numerous surrounding villages, has 8638 inhabitants (2011 census). Due to its central location and its historical importance as the main town of the old margraviate of Istria , Pazin / Pisino is the seat of the regional parliament of the county , which officially negotiates bilingual, Croatian and Italian.

history

Pazin / Pisino, whose landmark is the old Mitterburg (Pazin Castle) , was first mentioned in 983 as castrum Pisinium . In the 12th century, the place became the center of an independent rule, first by the Counts of Schwarzenburg and then by the Counts of Gorizia . In 1374 Pisino came into the possession of the Habsburgs. From 1805 to 1814 the city was under Napoleonic rule and was first part of the Kingdom of Italy; from 1809 it belonged to the Illyrian provinces . After 1815 Pisino was again part of the Habsburg monarchy and the meeting place of the Istrian state parliament. After the First World War, Pisino came to Italy in 1918. In 1945 the city was occupied by Yugoslavia and renamed Pazin. The town's Italian population was expelled. Since 1991 Pazin / Pisino has been part of independent Croatia.

Attractions

After the Second World War , Montecuccoli Castle was transformed into a museum. Other sights include the 13th century Abbey of St. Nikolai, the Franciscan monastery built there in the 15th century , the town hall and the karst river Pazinčica , which disappears into a swallow hole under the castle, which once belonged to the Counts of Montecuccoli . The French writer Jules Verne used the abyss of Pisino as the inspiration for his novel Mathias Sandorf . This geological feature was first explored in 1896.
