The Upper Franconia-West planning region is one of a total of 18 planning regions in the Free State of Bavaria .

The Upper Franconia-West planning region is located in northern Bavaria and is part of the Upper Franconia administrative region. The following bodies are united in the regional planning association: the independent cities of Bamberg and Coburg as well as the districts of Bamberg , Coburg , Forchheim , Kronach and Lichtenfels as well as the associated district communities.

The regional centers are the independent cities of Bamberg and Coburg . Associated middle areas are Bamberg, Coburg, Forchheim , Kronach , Lichtenfels and Neustadt bei Coburg . The latter has links with Sonneberg in Thuringia .

In 2015, almost 600,000 people lived in the region on an area of ​​3,680 km². Of these, over 77,000 lived in Bamberg and over 41,000 in Coburg.

In 1972 the Free State of Bavaria was divided into 18 planning regions on the basis of the Bavarian State Planning Act of 1970. The Regional Planning Association was established on May 16, 1973. The current association chairman is Bamberg District Administrator Johann Kalb .
