Porcelain Black

Porcelain Black , actually Alaina Marie Beaton (* 1. October 1985 in Detroit ) is an American industrial , pop-rock - singer . She began her career at the age of 18 under the stage name Porcelain and the Tramps with Virgin Records . However, Black and Virgin could not agree on the music they recorded and they spent three years getting out of the contract. She signed a contract with RedOnes Imprint , Universal Republic Records , in late 2009 and started working on her debut.

Early life

Black grew up in Detroit, Michigan and later in Sterling Heights . Her father was a hairdresser. He owned a hair salon and he brought her to fashion shows and photo shoots. Her parents separated when she was six years old. After her mother remarried, they moved to the affluent Rochester area where she attended high school. Living in less affluent areas, Black did not feel like one of her privileged classmates and became an outsider. She learned that her biological father had cancer when she was 15, and it affected her so badly that she was expelled from school within three months due to an argument. Two months later she was expelled from another school. Her father died when she was 16. Black participated in national dance sports competitions and took jazz, hip-hop and ballet classes. She trained to perform once on Broadway . She also considered becoming a background dancer. After she was expelled from her last school, Black ran away from home. She began to beg, use drugs and drink while sleeping with friends at night. After touring with Armor for Sleep , she returned to Detroit and stopped using drugs.

Music career

Virgin Records

While on a road trip in New York, Black was approached by her first manager, who told her to come see him when she turns 18. Eighteen months later, Black moved to Los Angeles, met her manager, and signed a contract with Virgin Records two weeks later. Using the pseudonym Porcelain and the Tramps , Black worked with Tommy Henriksen and John Lowery in London . However, she and the label couldn't agree on the music she was making. Virgin wanted Black to record Avril Lavigne- style pop music even though they knew what music she was doing when they signed up. Some of her collaborators were skeptical of her desire to mix industrial rock with dance pop. Black began uploading the songs she had recorded to MySpace , which had over 10 million views in just a few months. Black wrote the text for the background vocals for the song Lunacy Fringe of The Used with and sang this too. She was asked by Courtney Love on MySpace to record background vocals for her solo album. She also made a guest appearance on the song Action! by Street Drum Corps . How Do You Love Someone? a song that Black co-wrote was deleted by Ashley Tisdale for her second album, Guilty Pleasure . Black was initially reluctant to give the song away, but then gave in and was later able to use it for her own album with RedOne.

Universal Republic: 2009 - Present

Through a mutual A&R friend, the producer RedOne heard about Black and was keen to meet her. In November 2009, RedOne Black asked him to meet him in his studio, which led to them writing their debut single, This Is What Rock N Roll Looks Like , the next day . RedOne helped Black get out of her deal with Virgin Records and put her on his Universal Republic imprint, 2101 Records . RedOne introduced her to a new manager, Derrick "EI" Lawrence, who is also the manager of Lil Wayne . Wayne invited her to join him on his I Am Music Tour after he met her. They changed their name to Porcelain Black because the name created confusion and people thought Porcelain and the Tramps was a band. Her stage name came from a childhood nickname, Porcelain, because of her large collection of porcelain dolls from her aunt. Her aunt thought the dolls looked like her, with reddish-blond hair and fair skin. She took Black (in German: Schwarz) in her name because she was of the opinion that it represented the opposite of the "fragile" porcelain. She plans to take up the Porcelain and the Tramps project again in the future. Black wrote the Lolita song for Mexican pop singer Belinda . She also appeared in music videos for Travie McCoy's We'll Be Alright and Jeffree Stars Get Away With Murder in 2010 .

Her debut album was released in January 2012. RedOne produced all of the songs on the album and wrote all but one of them himself. She said Eminem could have a guest appearance on How Do You Love Someone? With RedOne's help, Black filmed a guest appearance for the upcoming film Rock of Ages , where she plays the lead singer of a glam metal band from the 80s. She also recorded the song Rock Angel , which was designed solely for the film . She made her television debut on The David Letterman Show on July 21, 2011. Naughty Naughty will be released as the second single from her album on November 15, 2011. On September 18, RedOne's single was leaked on YouTube . She plans to go on his I'm Still Music tour with Lil Wayne again .

On January 16, 2012, the song Prisoner (God's Paparazzi Remix) (featuring Porcelain Black) by Jeffree Star was leaked.

Music and influences

Black's voice was described as scratchy. She describes her music as the illegitimate child of Marilyn Manson and Britney Spears . Also, Black said she was inspired by Spears' choreography, while she was inspired by Manson's sound and attitude towards her song lyrics and style of performance. Black's two-tone, blonde and black, hairstyle and her "lacquer and leather" clothing style were also inspired by both Manson and Spears, as well as their desire to develop a role in which a stable duality between "good" and "bad" exists. Critics noted that her sound is more pop than rock, but Black insists on her rock and roll image and says, "... I know I'm rock n roll" The predilection for rock music from her biological father like Led Zeppelin , David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix influence it. She also lists Nine Inch Nails and its lead singer, Trent Reznor , Björk , Fiona Apple , Skinny Puppy , AC / DC , Hole and Oasis as musical influences.
