The Portland (Maine) Airport ( Portland International Jetport ; IATA code : PWM; ICAO code : KPWM) is an international commercial airport near Portland ( Maine ) in the northeastern United States .
Location and transport links
The Portland International Jetport is four kilometers southeast of downtown Portland. The Maine State Route 9 runs west of the airport, the Maine State Route 22 northwest of the airport. There is also an interchange on Interstate 95 west of the airport and an interchange on Interstate 295 south of the airport .
The Portland International Jetport is integrated into local public transport by buses ; Route 5 of the Greater Portland METRO connects it regularly with the city center of Portland.
history
It opened in the late 1920s ( Portland Westbrook Municipal ) and expanded into a regional airfield in the 1950s. It lies at a height of 23.5 m. It has two runways and is the largest airport in the state. Runway 11/29 was built in 1957 and extended to 2073 m (6800 feet) in 1966. The terminal opened in 1968 at the beginning of the new age.
In 2004 the runway was extended again, now to 2195 m (7200 feet).
Airlines and Destinations
Seven airlines operate scheduled flights at Portland International Jetport . In 2018, American Airlines including American Eagle had the highest market share among passengers with 28.39 percent, followed by Delta Air Lines including Delta Connection with 25.30 percent, United Airlines including United Express with 20.10 percent, Southwest Airlines with 14, 25 percent, Jetblue Airways with 8.29 percent, Frontier Airlines with 2.98 percent and Elite Airways with 0.62 percent. The remaining 0.07 percent was accounted for by charter flights.
Portland International Jetport has direct flights to 20 destinations, some of which are only offered seasonally. Contrary to the designation as an international airport, only destinations in the United States are served, especially hubs of the individual airlines. At times, destinations in Canada were also served .

Incidents
- On August 11, 1949 accident Convair CV-240 of Northeast Airlines ( air vehicle registration NC91241 ) while landing at the airport, Portland. All 28 inmates survived. The aircraft was written off as a total loss. The cause was the unintentional activation of the reverse thrust prior to touchdown due to a defective locking mechanism.
Others
On July 1, 2005, a plane landed in Portland for the first time after a transatlantic flight, it was a Boeing 757 of the American Primaris Airlines .
