Portugália Airlines , actually Portugália Companhia Portuguesa de Transportes Aereos SAA or PGA for short , from June 2016 under the brand TAP Express , is a Portuguese regional airline based in Lisbon and based at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport . It is a subsidiary of TAP Portugal , for which it operates flights.

history

BAe ATP from the PGA

Portugália was founded in 1988 and began operations in 1990 with a Fokker 100 . The company posted a loss of $ 12 million in the first two years, and made its first small profit in 1993. The majority owner with 84.35% was the Portuguese Espírito Santo Financial Group . In 1999 Portugália was to be sold to SAirGroup , the parent company of Swissair . Due to delays under antitrust and European law and later due to financial problems at Swissair, the final sale did not take place. A claim for damages by the Espírito Santo Financial Group in the amount of 105 million euros against the insolvency administrator of Swissair was judicially rejected in 2003.

From 2001 to 2005 Portugália was by Skytrax each year the title Best European Regional Airline (dt. Best European regional airline ) awarded. In 2004, Portugália carried its ten millionth passenger.

On November 27, 2007, the takeover of 99.836% of the Portugália shares by the country's largest airline, TAP Portugal , was agreed. As part of this agreement with Espírito Santo Financial Group, TAP also took over Portugália's six percent stake in the ground handling provider Groundforce .

In the wake of the takeover by TAP, Portugália flights are now only operated under their flight numbers and only marketed through TAP.

At the beginning of 2016 it was announced that the Portugália brand would completely disappear from the market. In the course of this, the company will be renamed TAP Portugal express and, in addition to a fleet renewal, will also have a new corporate design, which is similar to that of the parent company, but with the express logo added.

Destinations

Within Portugal, Portugália Airlines flies to Madeira , Lisbon , Porto Santo , Faro , São Miguel , Pico , Terceira , Faial and Porto on behalf of and on behalf of TAP . Destinations across Europe include Brussels , Paris , Luxembourg and London . Portugália Airlines also used to fly to Germany and Switzerland, for example Cologne / Bonn and Basel-Mulhouse .
