ProQuote Film is a non-profit organization. He is committed to increasing the proportion of women in all areas of film production. ProQuote Film was created through the renaming of the equal opportunities initiative in the film and television industry called ProQuote Regie, which was initiated by over 370 women directors in Germany. The aim of the initiative was originally a gender-balanced composition of state film funding bodies and an increase in the proportion of women directors in German television programs and in German film productions.

history

From 2014, the initiative on the organized club pro quota directed , among others, by the directors Katinka Feistl , Annette Ernst , Tatjana Turanskyj , and Imogen Kimmel was founded. He was supported by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth of the SPD, the Greens and the Left.

At the beginning of 2018, the initiative was renamed ProQuote Film.

Pro Quote Direction was supported by well-known producers, actors, filmmakers, editors as well as festival and film funding managers. These included Stefan Arndt , Michael Ballhaus , Senta Berger , Veronica Ferres , Ulrike Folkerts , Ulrich Gregor , Erika Gregor , Eva Hubert , Dieter Kosslick , Katja Riemann , Volker Schlöndorff , Dorothee Schön and Julia Thurnau . The list of supporters also included people active in politics, for example Manuela Schwesig , Elke Ferner , Falk Neubert , Claudia Roth , Ulla Schauws , Tabea Rößner and Sigrid Hupach .

Background and demands

According to the 1st diversity report by the Bundesverband Regie (2010–2013), the percentage of female directors in fictional prime time slots on German television is only 11%, that is to say 89% of male directors. In feature films, the proportion of women is slightly higher at 22%, with highly budgeted feature films having a similarly low proportion of female directors as the main evening TV program. This small proportion cannot be explained by a lack of interest on the part of women in the directing profession, because 42% of directing graduates at German film schools are women. The study by the University of Rostock "Who makes German films? Gender Report 2009–2013 ”, which was presented at the Berlinale 2015, comes to the conclusion that every fifth German feature film (22%) between 2009 and 2013 was directed by a woman, and films by women directors were usually financially are poorly equipped.

The initiative points out that the introduction of a quota system in Sweden has brought the proportion of women in key positions in film productions more or less in line with the population. As a result, the initiative calls for an equal number of film funding bodies and the implementation of a gradual quota for women in the award of directorships in the film and television sector, so that a gender-equitable distribution is achieved. This is to take into account the plurality of a modern society, because diversity cannot be guaranteed if over 80% of all films are made by men.

After the journalist network Pro Quote Medien and the Pro Quote Medizin association founded by female doctors and medical professors, Pro Quote Direction is the third initiative with which women with a high percentage in their industry are fighting for more female managers and financial resources.

The demands of Pro Quote Regie have been discussed in the media since the association was founded. At the Berlinale 2015, the initiative appeared for the first time in the context of a broader public with the financial support of the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Manuela Schwesig, and was well received by the media. In February 2015, Margrét Rún said in the context of ProQuote's first Berlinale campaign: "Men alone on Olympus - because women naked in pumps with a sack full of stones have to climb the film Olympus".

Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters has commissioned further studies on the proportion of women in various areas of film. According to the Süddeutscher Zeitung , she said in early February 2015 : “The figures already available from the directing area speak for themselves: women are clearly underrepresented here, something has to be done to do!"
