ProjectTogether is a non-profit social enterprise that supports young people across Germany to develop innovative initiatives and social startups to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals .

History and funding

In 2012, as an exchange student in Great Britain, Philipp von der Wippel started an initiative to support those affected in the Syrian civil war . After the campaign received national media attention, he then founded the ProjectTogether initiative together with Michael Heider and Maximilian Schlereth to encourage young people to start similar projects.

More than 150 projects were funded in 2014. In 2015 it was founded as a non-profit company and the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt joined as the first funding partner. After receiving the Google Impact Challenge 2016 award, ProjectTogether's work has been largely financed by the Schöpflin Foundation and the Robert Bosch Foundation since 2017 . In 2018, the organization was awarded the European Commission's European Entrepreneurship Prize for its commitment .

Since 2017, more than 250 projects have been funded each year that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals . By 2020, more than 1,000 social initiatives and social startups were funded in this way. Well-known funded projects are the #FreeInterrail initiative , the NGO Center for Feminist Foreign Policy , the AIAS - Students against Blood Cancer and welobby associations , and the Integreat app .

ProjectTogether is a member of the Social Entrepreneurship Network Germany .

aims

ProjectTogether wants to empower young people to develop innovative initiatives to solve the Sustainable Development Goals. Due to the increasing complexity of societal challenges, the organization advocates not addressing them with “traditional solution strategies” alone, but instead assigning a greater role to civil society . To this end, the organization would like to test a large number of new small-scale solutions using the " bottom-up " approach and offer individual support for the most promising approaches.

Approach and funding opportunities

ProjectTogether identifies social challenges with a need for new solutions and starts thematic funding programs ("missions"), together with an alliance of actors from foundations , NGOs , companies and the public sector .

ProjectTogether then runs a publicity campaign to draw attention to the problem and to look for young founders with suitable solutions. In each “mission” around 100 initiators are funded and validated by parallel testing, which approaches work and should be scaled.

The funded founders are funded via a digital platform, which gives access to the expertise of over 500 coaches and mentors and offers webinars , resources and support from other funding partners and donors.

ProjectTogether's funding programs include #startupnextdoor , a joint program with Mini Deutschland to support founders with ideas for the “future of urban life”, # Europawahl19 , a program to mobilize young voters, together with celebrities like Luisa Neubauer , Lucas Reiber and Jan Hofer , or #ActOnPlastic , a program together with soulbottles and the Röchling Foundation , to promote initiatives and startups against plastic waste .

In 2020, ProjectTogether was one of the initiators of the world's largest hackathon, WirVsVirus, of the federal government for projects against the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic .

reception

The Federal Ministry of Economics describes ProjectTogether as a “great success for committed and responsible entrepreneurship. The concept shows that entrepreneurship and social commitment can go hand in hand very well. "
