WirVsVirus ( spelling #WirVsVirus ) is a hackathon and a subsequent implementation program for projects against the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic . The hackathon, which took place virtually from March 20-22, 2020, was the largest hackathon worldwide.

background

The model for WirVsVirus was a similar hackathon in Estonia in early March. Inspired by this, the organizations Tech4Germany , Code for Germany , Impact Hub Berlin, ProjectTogether , SEND eV , Initiative D21 and Prototype Fund realized the WirVsVirus Hackathon on a voluntary basis within five days under the patronage of the German government . At the same time, a funding program was planned to implement the proposed solutions on a sustainable basis.

Hackathon

At the WirVsVirus Hackathon from March 20-22 , 2020, solutions to the challenges caused by the corona crisis were sought. To this end, over 2,000 challenges from all areas of life were submitted in advance, including over 200 from various federal ministries. The more than 43,000 registered people were networked with each other via the Slack messenger app , and ultimately 28,000 people actively took part in the hackathon. Within 48 hours, over 1,500 projects with solutions to the submitted challenges were created, 20 of which were recognized as winning projects.

The hackathon inspired similar events in other countries, including the European Commission's hackathon EUvsVirus with 20,000 participants and the World Health Organization's global hackathon BuildforCOVID19 .

Implementation program

Following the hackathon, the WirVsVirus funding program for the implementation of the hackathon projects, which consists of four parts, started on April 10, 2020 .

In addition to the 20 winning projects, a further 110 solutions are funded in the WirVsVirus Solution Enabler . The 130 projects receive support in strategic development as well as network opportunities and resources. A selection of the projects is also funded with 1.5 million euros by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research through the Prototype Fund . Since June 2020, the 15 winning projects of the # wirfürschule hackathon have also been funded in the WirVsVirus Solution Enabler.

In May 2020, the WirVsVirus Solution Builder started as a " Fast-Track Program" to implement ten of the 130 projects within eight weeks with the help of companies.

In addition, since May 2020, the WirVsVirus Matching Fund has been paying grants for crowdfunding campaigns on startnext for projects related to the corona crisis.

Via WirVsVirus Community Management , all hackathon participants will continue to be looked after via Slack and networking offers will be created.

The WirVsVirus implementation program is financially supported by the Federal Chancellery , the BMBF , Google Germany, the Vodafone Institute, Urban Impact, Ray Sono, the KfW Foundation, the Hertie Foundation , the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt , Susanne Klatten and Janina and Benjamin Otto .

reception

Federal President Steinmeier praised the participants of the hackathon as “heroes in the Corona crisis.” Helge Braun said that with the hackathon, Germany was “a digital trendsetter for the first time.” Education Minister Anja Karliczek said the hackathon had the “wealth of ideas of the country of innovation Germany shown in an impressive way. "

In April 2020, the Bundestag faction Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen called for a “digital budget that can be accessed quickly”, with which the WirVsVirus hackathon projects should be funded, as these “threatened to peter out”. In the meantime, there was also criticism in the media that the financial support for the projects would not start quickly enough.
