The Puezkofel ( Ladin Col de Puez ) is a 2725  m high mountain in the South Tyrolean Dolomites .

Location and surroundings

The Puezkofel is located roughly in the center of the Puez group in the South Tyrolean Dolomites ( Italy ). To the northwest, a ridge leads to the Puez peaks ( 2918  m ), the highest peaks in the mountain range. In the north-east it falls to the Puezjoch ( 2517  m ), which connects the Zwischenkofel valley in the north and the Vallunga in the south. At the southeast foot of the Puezkofel is the Puezhütte , to the west is the Puezalm.

It is located in the municipality of Selva di Val Gardena and is part of the Puez-Geisler Nature Park .

geology

The Puezkofel geologically forms part of the Puez-Odle-Gardenaccia plateau - a northern offshoot of the Tridentine threshold . The plateau is underlain by the relatively flat, up to 1000 meters thick Dolomia Principale ( main dolomite ). This huge Triassic carbonate platform is crowned in the Puez group by the 10 meter thick Calcare di Dachstein ( Dachstein limestone ) with numerous small megalodonts . The overlying Jura is represented by Ammonitico Rosso , up to 20 meters thick . The sedimentation of the Lower Cretaceous begins above this with Biancone , in turn overlaid by the 110-meter-thick Puez Formation, which reaches towards the end of the Aptium .

The lower chalk sediments at the summit of the Puezkofel are spectacularly driven over by the Upper Triassic Dolomia Principale in a southerly direction and partly compressed (so-called summit thrust ). The thickness of the postponed dolomite is very variable, but can reach up to 150 meters. In turn, it carries the Gardenacia formation - a whitish to yellow dolosparite, which is likely to have arisen from the dolomitization of the Biancone sediments.

Alpinism

The Puezkofel is an easy tour destination that is often climbed in combination with the somewhat more challenging Puez peaks. The normal route to the summit begins at the Puezhütte, which in turn can be reached from several directions via paths that lead up from Val Badia , Val Gardena via Vallunga or from the Campiller Valley . The footpath leads first through the south and west slopes of the Puezkofel and then in serpentines through steep terrain to the summit.

Surname

The Puezkofel owes its name to the Puez Alm to the west. The etymology of the word Puez is unclear. Possibly related to a pre-Roman bova meaning debris flow caused by landslide .
