The DFB-Elf was looked after for the first time by team boss Franz Beckenbauer and Pumpido advanced to the support of the Argentine team. He was there for the first time in 1982 at a football World Cup, but had to be content with the substitute role behind Ubaldo Fillol . Four years later in Mexico he was number one under coach Carlos Bilardo . Pumpido was Argentina's goalkeeper when they won the 1986 World Cup . He completed all seven tournament games alongside superstar Diego Maradona . At the 1990 World Cup , in which Argentina made it to the final, Pumpido was injured so badly in the second game against the Soviet Union on June 13, 1990 in Naples that there were two missions.
