Punta del Este is a city in Uruguay . It is located about 140 km east of Montevideo in the Maldonado department in the immediate vicinity of the department 's capital of the same name .

geography

The seaside resort is located at the extreme end of the mouth of the Río de la Plata, partly on a peninsula, at the imaginary extension of which the front island tip is the dividing line between the Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean . Due to this location, Punta del Este, which is largely surrounded by a sandy beach , has two different coastlines. The so-called Playa Mansa is located on the south-western side on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, while Playa Brava can be found on the Atlantic coast in the east, where the sea and surf are significantly rougher. Other stretches of beach on the side facing the Atlantic are Playa El Emir and Playa de los Ingleses .

Across from Punta del Este, about at the level of the peninsula, is the Isla Gorriti in the Rio de la Plata, a short distance away . It is an uninhabited, but touristic island with an area of 21 ha, which is a popular attraction for water sports enthusiasts. Off the Atlantic coast in the east of the peninsula is a 41 hectare island, the Isla de Lobos , also 12 kilometers away . This is home to a large colony of sea lions , which are the daily destination of numerous boat trips offered in the port of Punta del Este.

The appearance of the city on the coast is dominated by high-rise buildings, usually hotels and apartment blocks. Immediately behind the coastal road there are many villas in parkland. The Rambla Gral leads around the peninsula, in the front part of which no high-rise buildings are available or permitted . Artigas an embankment. During the evening sunsets, this regularly serves as a meeting point for the population to watch this natural spectacle.

tourism

The current population of almost 20,000 multiplies in the three-month main travel season from mid-December to mid-March. In total, between 600,000 and 700,000 tourists visit the city each year, the majority of whom come from Argentina . The rest comes from Uruguay itself, the south of Brazil , other Latin American countries and increasingly from the USA and Europe. Punta del Este serves as a magnet for South American celebrities and a wealthy clientele, which is also reflected in the significantly higher cost of living compared to the rest of Uruguay.

Due to the strong nature of the season, economic activity increases considerably in the summer months there. Many shops, restaurants and other businesses only open during this time.

Culture and sights

Landmarks of Punta del Este are “Los Dedos” (the fingers), a stone sculpture about five meters wide and three meters high in the shape of a hand that rises out of the sand on one of the beaches. Striking buildings in the city are also the 45 m high lighthouse on the peninsula, built by Tomás Libarena in 1860, and the Iglesia de la Candelaria , a Catholic church built in 1941, which can also be found there . The extravagant former house of the artist Carlos Páez Vilaró , known as Casapueblo , in Punta Ballena , which houses a museum and an art gallery, is well worth a visit . Not far from there, also at Punta Ballena , is the Lussich Arboretum . In addition to state casinos, there is a large American casino in Punta del Este, which is also the largest hotel in town, the “Conrad”. Large poker tournaments were and are held here. A film festival called Festival Internacional de Cine de Punta del Este , the 15th edition of which was held in March 2012, also takes place regularly in Punta del Este . Another regularly held cultural event is the Punta del Este International Jazz Festival , which premiered in 1996.

Sports

On December 5, 2010, Punta del Este hosted the full-distance triathlon "IronPunta 2010" with an international group of over 200 athletes from nine nations. In addition, an annual marathon with international participation has been held in the city since 2008 . With the Torneo Merryl Lynch , a golf tournament with the participation of top international athletes will also be held on site. Punta del Este was a stage destination of the Whitbread Round the World Race several times . On December 13, 2014, the third Formula E race of the season was held on a temporary street circuit in Punta del Este .

The El Jagüel airport is also located in the immediate vicinity of the city . There is also a ferry connection from Buenos Aires to Montevideo via the company Buquebus . From there, Punta del Este can be reached by individual road traffic or via one of the two bus lines that serve the city several times a day. The city also has a marina , which is not suitable for larger ships. As a result, about cruise ships their passengers for a day trip ashore bail out while they are close to the Isla Gorriti anchor.
