Rachel Lee Brand (born May 1, 1973 in Muskegon , Michigan ) is an American lawyer . She was US Associate Attorney General from May 22, 2017 to February 20, 2018, the third highest office in the United States Department of Justice . She moved into the private sector at Walmart .

Life

Rachel Brand is the daughter of dairy farmers of Dutch origin. She grew up in Pella , Iowa , and graduated from Pella Christian High School in 1991. She began studying at the University of Minnesota in Morris , got there in 1995 after a stay in Merida (Venezuela) the Bachelor degree and went to Harvard Law School to study law . There she worked as deputy editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy and was involved in the conservative Federalist Society . In 1998 she graduated from there with a Juris Doctor .

From 1998 to 1999, Brand Law clerk was Charles Frieds , a Harvard professor and judge at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court . Brand was admitted to the bar in 1999 in New York and in 2000 in the District of Columbia . US President Donald Trump nominated Brand as US Associate Attorney General on February 1, 2017. The nomination was forwarded to the Senate plenum in April 2017 by the Justice Committee with 11 to 9 votes (along the party lines). On May 18, she was confirmed to office by the United States Senate by 52 votes to 46 and sworn in on May 22. She was the first woman in this office and was responsible for civil rights, environmental and antitrust issues - and thus for overseeing controversial issues such as transgender rights and the entry moratorium against citizens of Muslim majority countries ( Executive Order 13780 ). If her direct superior Rod Rosenstein had declared himself biased about his role in the dismissal of FBI Director James Comey , Brand would have had to take over the supervision of the investigation against President Trump and his team in connection with suspected Russia connections , the special investigator Robert Mueller leads. Brand's lack of experience in law enforcement was considered problematic . On February 9, 2018, the Ministry of Justice announced that Brand would leave the house and switch to the private sector.

Brand joined as Vice President ( EVP ) and as Corporate Secretary to Walmart . She took up her position at Walmart on February 20, 2018.

Brand met her future husband Jonathan Cohn at Harvard , who also worked temporarily for the US Department of Justice. The couple have two sons. She is a member of the Presbyterian Church and is active in her local parish. In February 2018, she and her family moved to Bentonville , Arkansas .
