Raimund Apfelbach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raimund Apfelbach (born March 5, 1943 in Stuttgart ) is a German biologist and former professor of neurobiology at the University of Tübingen . He researches the olfactory system in all important aspects: olfactory pattern recognition, learning, secretions & pheromones as well as the neural coding of olfactory stimuli.

Life

Raimund Apfelbach studied biology in Gießen and Freiburg from 1963 to 1968 . At the University of Munich , he was under the guidance of Konrad Lorenz with a thesis on comparative quantitative studies of reproductive behavior brutpflegemono- and -dimorpher tilapia (Pisces, Cichlidae) doctorate doctorate . From 1966–1969, Apfelbach was a scholarship holder of the Max Planck Society , and from 1969–1970 a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at Yale University . 1970–1971 he was Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley , 1971–1972 Research Associate at Yale University. 1972–1973 he worked with a habilitation grant from the DFG at the University of Regensburg . In 1973 he became assistant at the chair of zoophysiology (later animal physiology ) at the University of Tübingen, where he completed his habilitation in 1974 and was appointed professor of neurobiology in 1980.

In 1988, the Apfelbach working group was recognized by the Federal Office for Civilian Service as an employment agency in the field of environmental and nature conservation.

From 2002–2004, Apfelbach was part of the “Theory of Information Transfer and Combinatorics” research group at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld University

2003–2004 he worked as a visiting professor at the University of Sydney in Australia.

Scientific work

Apfelbach has worked on almost all aspects of the olfactory system. He has produced around 200 scientific publications: He has made over 100 conference contributions, published 70 refereed articles, contributed 40 films to the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica Göttingen ( Institute for Scientific Film ) and also written many accompanying publications to films about behavioral research.

One focus of Apfelbach's work is the neural basis of olfactory behavior. He and his colleagues found that fragrances given during development lead to an impression . During the fragrance, a new network occurs in the olfactory bulb ( an increase in spine was found , among other things ). Depending on their previous olfactory experience, adult animals show behavioral differences, e.g. B. in learning behavior, or in eating behavior. Is u. a. that animals which only got to know a certain scent during their development, later reject food without this scent.

Cooperations

Meetings

Prof. Apfelbach has organized many national and international conferences. The 27th International Ethological Conference deserves special mention

Research stays

He traveled seven times to East Africa (including the Serengeti Research Institute ), Ivory Coast, Gabon and Zimbabwe, and Siberia.
