career

youth

In the black and white team of Heider SV in Dithmarschen, the junior Waberski went through the youth classes and was accepted into the German youth national team in 1961 due to his technical skills and goal danger . Under the then responsible DFB coach Helmut Schön , the A-youth of the "small HSV" made his debut on March 12, 1961 in Flensburg in the friendly international match against England in the DFB youth team. In the 2-0 success he distinguished himself as a goalscorer in the center forward position. In the attack, Helmut Schön had relied on the line-up of Fritz Boyens , Wolfgang Overath , Waberski, Gerhard Elfert (1 goal) and Horst Wild in the World Cup system . At the 1961 UEFA youth tournament in Portugal, the DFB juniors took third place; Waberski contributed a goal to the 2: 1 success in Lisbon in the small final against Spain on April 8th. The offensive player from Heide was a second time in the DFB-Elf at the UEFA youth tournament in Romania in 1962. He tried the start in senior football in the home HSV stadium on Meldorfer Strasse in the amateur league Schleswig-Holstein. In 1963 the championship could be celebrated, but in the promotion round to Regionalliga Nord they clearly failed. After a third place in the 1963/64 series, he accepted the offer from Bayer 04 Leverkusen and moved to the second division of the Regionalliga West for the 1964/65 season.

Regionalliga, 1964 to 1972

Under coach Fritz Pliska , the newcomer from Heide made his debut on August 16, 1964 in the Ulrich Haberland Stadium at home in a 3-3 draw against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Regionalliga West. He acted as a center forward and scored a goal. Werner Biskup set the tone in defense and experts like Hans-Otto Peters , Franz-Josef Wolfframm and Werner Görts stormed alongside Waberski . Bayer surprisingly played for relegation and Waberski scored five goals in 14 league games when they reached 16th place. In his second year in Leverkusen, Theo Kirchberg took over as coach and with Karl-Heinz Ripkens , Dieter Fern , Hans Broichhausen and Helmut Brücken new offensive forces came to Bayer 04. The round was unsatisfactory for Waberski, he only made four appearances. In the summer of 1966, he returned to northern Germany and joined VfB Lübeck in the 1966/67 season in the Regionalliga Nord.

In the Green-Whites von der Lohmühle , Waberski stormed five rounds in the Regionalliga Nord. He experienced the greatest success with VfB in the 1968/69 season , when under coach Kurt "Jockel" Krause the runner-up championship could be won. Waberski scored eleven goals in 27 league games alongside teammates like Manfred Bomke (goalkeeper), Horst Wenzel , Claus Schygulla, Hans-Jürgen Wittfoht , Siegfried Bronnert , Otto Hartz , Helmut Hosung , Siegfried Agurew and Gerd-Volker Schock . In the subsequent Bundesliga promotion round, he scored two goals in six games against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, Freiburg FC, SV Alsenborn and Hertha Zehlendorf. But also the local derbies against Phönix Lübeck , the team from the stadium on Travemünder Allee took sixth place, with their top performers Jürgen Stars (goalkeeper), Peter Nogly , Siegfried Beyer and Jochen Aido stood out in this round. With the 2-2 draw on May 16, 1971 at Göttingen 05, the attacker ended his activity with the Green-Whites after a total of 115 regional league appearances for VfB Lübeck with 33 goals after the 1970/71 season and returned to his homeland in Heide .

Under coach Werner Bannasch , Heide finished ninth in the Regionalliga Nord in 1971/72. In addition to teammates such as Jens-Uwe Schnoor (goalkeeper), Udo Schmidt, Heinz Kühn, Peter Darsow, Peter-Reinhard Pulter, Hans-Jürgen Reh and Horst Friedrichsen, Waberski was only able to play in ten missions. In his last regional league game, April 3, 1972, in a 1: 3 away defeat against Olympia Wilhelmshaven, he scored his only goal of the season.

From the 1972/73 round, his footballing career ended in the amateur area at ATSV Stockelsdorf , located near Lübeck.
