Raymond B. Manning
Raymond Brendan Manning (born October 11, 1934 in Brooklyn , New York City , † January 18, 2000 in Arlington , Virginia ), was an American zoologist and taxonomist .
Life
Raymond B. Manning was born in Brooklyn on October 11, 1934. Shortly after he was born, his mother, Elizabeth Smith, moved with him to Haiti . During the Second World War they lived in Bethesda , Maryland , but after the end of the same they moved back to Haiti to the house of his stepfather, Franklin Brown Manning, in Port-au-Prince . At the age of twelve he was sent to St. Leo boarding school in Tempa , Florida .
From 1952 to 1954 he attended the University of Florida at Gainesville and received his Bachelor of Science in Zoology (1956), his Master of Science in Marine Biology (1959) and his Ph.D. in Marine Biology (1963) from the University of Miami and was immediately employed as an Associate Curator at the Smithsonian Institution . In 1967 he became chairman of the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the National Museum of Natural History . He was a lecturer at the University of Maryland , George Washington University, and the University of Miami.
He was a founding member of the Crustacean Society in 1979 and president of the same from 1981 to 1983. He was also a member of the Cosmos Club . He also collected over 50,000 specimens of decapods (Decapoda) and mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) for the National Museum of Natural History and other institutions.
Raymond B. Manning was married to Lilly King (1935-2010) since 1957, who illustrated many of his publications. He named two species in her honor: Platysquilloides lillyae and Viridotheres lillyae . They had a daughter together. He lived with his wife in Vienna , Virginia until his death on January 18, 2000 at Arlington Hospital .
