Raymond Dumais

Raymond Dumais (born June 4, 1950 in Amqui , Québec , † October 19, 2012 in Rimouski , Québec) was Bishop of Gaspé .

Life

Raymond Dumais attended the Collège Saint-Benoît-Labre in Amqui (1963/68) and the Cégep de Rimouski (1968/70). After his philosophical and theological training at the Université du Québec à Rimouski (1970/76), he was ordained a priest on June 26, 1976 by Joseph Marie Régis Belzile , Bishop of Moundou . From 1976 to 1980 he was vicar in Saint-Jérôme. At the Institut Catholique de Paris (1980/83) he graduated with a master's in theology and at the Dominican College in Ottawa (1990/93) with a degree in biblical studies, where he also did his doctoratehas been. From 1984 to 1990 he was responsible for the adult education of the diocese and was a member of the subcommittee for adult education of the Bishops' Conference . From 1984 to 1990 he was a representative of his diocese in the Bible Society and from 1984 to 1993 he was a postdoc fellow and lecturer at the Université du Québec à Rimouski. In 1992/93 he completed biblical and archaeological training courses in Jerusalem.

Dumais was against the encyclical “ Veritatis Splendor ” published by John Paul II in 1993 , particularly criticizing the rejection of artificial contraception and the exclusion of remarried divorced Catholics from receiving the sacraments. Nevertheless, after discussions with Cardinal Ratzinger , the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith granted him the nihil obstat for a bishopric.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Gaspé on December 27, 1993 . The Archbishop of Rimouski , Bertrand Blanchet , donated him episcopal ordination on May 20, 1994 ; Co- consecrators were Pierre Morissette , Bishop of Baie-Comeau , and Gilles Ouellet PME , Senior Archbishop of Rimouski.

On July 21, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his application for laization and resignation after publicly declaring that he was living with a woman. After being promoted to the laity, he married and adopted his wife's two children. Since 2002 he worked for the Pastoral Institute of the Archdiocese of Rimouski .

Awards

Raymond Dumais was awarded the prix de l'Association catholique des études bibliques au Canada (ACEBAC) in 1992 .
