Rebel without a reason is the tenth solo album by Berlin rapper Prinz Pi . It was released on January 28, 2011 on his independent label Keine Liebe Records in three different versions.

style

Texts

Several tracks on the album deal with the theme of love in all its facets. This is how Prince Pi describes in the first single You are his love for an unnamed woman, who does not reciprocate the love. In Eifer & Sucht , the rapper talks about jealousy in one of his relationships. The title Laura is about a relationship that is falling apart. Shortly afterwards, the friend commits suicide. According to Prince Pi, the song is based on a true story. He had been writing this song for five years, but never found the right words or the right music for it.

It also contains songs that are critical of society (e.g. Virus ). In Drei † für Deutschland, for example, Prince Pi tells the story of three German soldiers, one of whom was killed off the coast of Somalia. The other two die in their home country under unusual circumstances such as suicide due to the pressure of traumatic experiences in the Iraq war. The war is also dealt with in Krieg @ Home , where it is fictitiously told that the war is also taking place in Germany and that this is exactly what happened.

The song iGod can be assigned to the battle rap . However, there are also some passages in the song that express themselves ironically about this attitude. Prinz Pi denotes iGod as a type of spoof .

In the title Proof, however, Prince Pi expresses his displeasure with the negative image of rap in society and counts counter- evidence for the cliché of violence-glorifying, primitive rap. So he calls u. a. the rappers Basstard , Casper , Kamp , Tua , Maeckes , Morlockk Dilemma , Taktloss , Timi Hendrix , Dendemann , and the hip-hop formation KIZ as counter-evidence .

Overall, the album is a bit more emotional, but in terms of content it shows great parallels to the rapper's earlier albums. Prince Pi himself describes Rebel as his most personal work for no reason .

music

There are a few more rocky beats on Rebell ohne Grund . Distorted guitars can be heard in the title Queen of Kreuzberg . Prinz Pi said that there are few synth beats on the record , but he describes the background music as typical hip-hop . It was important to the rapper that the music didn't sound like it was on the computer. In many cases, instruments were recorded instead of using digital settings.

Album title

According to Prince Pi, the title refers to the fact that he rebels against habits and events in society without having an exact reason to defend himself against it. In addition, the name is based on the film Rebel Without a Cause by James Dean , which appeared in 1955.

production

As usual, the beats for the album were mainly produced by Biztram . The Berlin producer was responsible for 13 of the 18 beats on the standard edition. The last track proof against it was produced by the Viennese producer Whiz Vienna. In addition, the production team The Royals was responsible for the productions of Krieg @ Home , Lullaby and Dawn . Next was Laura produced by tikay One. A children's choir is also used in the title Wunderkind . This consists of Kiyomi Mason, Dilara Faki and Melissa Faki. In Queen of Kreuzberg by will also resorted to a guitar, Archi Alert , former singer and guitarist of the punk group terrorist group , was recorded.

Biztram and Carsten Schedler mixed Rebell without a reason . The mastering was done by Matthias Millhoff.

Guest Posts

Four songs on the album feature guest contributions from other rappers. E-Rich and the head chef can be heard on Krieg @ Home . The Austrian Kamp appears at Marathon Mann . Timi Hendrix from the rap duo Pimpulsiv , Frauenarzt and Biztram, the main producer of the album, have guest contributions on the title Rand II and Mudi and RAF Camora rap a verse each at dawn . The singer Dana can also be heard on the iTunes bonus song Märchenwald .

  • The online magazine laut.de certified the album to be “another interim balance sheet of a grown rap workaholic” and awarded 3 out of a possible 5 points:

Prinz Pi is developing, if you will, into a consensus rapper who is actually doing everything right. Regardless of whether it is a grumpy rap journal or the Süddeutsche Zeitung - you can only find praise for the latest work by the 'commissioned student rapper', who has long since put the 'porn' in its name. One can only hope that rough edges do not follow. [...] This album is by far his most personal. [...] All in all, 'Rebell ohne Grund' doesn't seem like the result of a completed development towards a new artist, but rather like a further interim balance sheet of a grown rap workaholic. Of course, at Friedrich Kautz this still results in a significantly higher level than most of what is marketed as a 'milestone' by colleagues in the field. As I said: Pi has always operated by its own yardstick. "

  • The website Rap.de described Rebell as a great concept album for no reason and awarded five out of five stars:

'No love', preached the native of Zehlendorf on his debut album 'Porno Privat', with which he suddenly became known in the Berlin underground scene. Thirteen years after the release of his first work, he is now dedicating an entire album to the theme of 'love'. Who would have thought that? Hatred, jealousy, remorse and pity - Pi describes in his songs emotional states in which the listener can put himself very well without drifting in a kitschy direction. [...] 18 varied tracks make the CD one of the best concept albums that Pi has released so far. Rebellious, varied, great! "

  • The hip-hop magazine Juice Rated rebel without cause with five of six possible crowns:

The lyrics are bursting with attitude, meticulousness and precision, but 'Rebell ohne Grund' also means a musical advancement from the recently quite synthetic-futuristic sound to organic music with lots of real instruments. It might sound angular now, but the result is pretty awesome. (...) What turned out to be more classic or retrospective on 'Axis of the Beautiful', on 'Rebel Without Reason' has a predominantly contemporary to visionary effect: the listener is surprised at times progressive, sometimes punky guitar runs and whipping drums, but also dodgy Electronic ('Generation Porno') and soulful-Boombappig ('Etc.') emerge. (...) Of course, there are also pop-cultural cross-references in abundance to 'Rebel without a reason'. "
