The metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte , Portuguese Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte (RMBH), also known internationally as Greater Belo Horizonte , is a metropolitan region in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It was established by law on June 8, 1973 and has its seat in the city of Belo Horizonte . It consists of 34 cities that make up the actual metropolitan region. Another 16 municipalities form a city belt around the region (Portuguese Colar Metropolitano ).
As of July 1, 2018, an estimated 5,313,480 inhabitants lived in the metropolitan region on an area of 9471.7 km², in the surrounding belt or the chain of municipalities a further 602,709 inhabitants lived on an area of 5507.4 km². Overall, urban spatial planning results in a catchment area of 5,916,189 inhabitants and an area of 14,979.1 km². It ranks third of the 74 Brazilian metropolitan regions (as of 2018).
It is not a regional authority to which representatives of the people can be directly elected. The basic organ is the Assembleia Metropolitana (German: Metropolitan Assembly ), consisting of four representatives of the government executive, one representative of the state legislature and the 34 city prefects (mayors) and presidents of the city councils.
