Rembert Weakland

Rembert Weakland OSB (born April 2, 1927 in Patton , Pennsylvania ) is a retired Roman Catholic Archbishop . From 1977 to 2002 he was Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee .

Life

George Weakland joined the order of the Benedictines in Latrobe in 1945 , adopted the name Rembert and studied church music . On June 24, 1951, he was ordained a priest in Subiaco , Italy from Bishop Simone Lorenzo Salvi OSB . On 26 June 1963 he became the abbot of St. Vincent Archabbey selected and received by Bishop William Graham Connare the benediction on August 29 1963rd

From 1967 to 1977 Weakland was Abbot Primate and the highest representative of the Benedictine Confederation . On September 20, 1977, Weakland was founded by Pope Paul VI. named Archbishop of Milwaukee. He received his episcopal ordination on November 8, 1977 in Milwaukee Cathedral from the Apostolic Delegate in the USA, Archbishop Jean Jadot . Co- consecrators were his predecessor William Edward Cousins and the Bishop of Greensburg , William Graham Connare.

Weakland, who was also a gifted pianist, was soon valued as a connoisseur of the liturgy , especially as an expert in Gregorian chant . His episcopal duties delayed the completion of his doctorate, but he never gave up his scientific work. On 21 December 1999 he was at the Columbia University in New York in musicology doctorate . In his dissertation ( The Office Antiphons of Ambrosian Chant ) he researched the antiphons of Ambrosian chant .

One of his last significant acts as Archbishop was the highly controversial renovation of Milwaukee Cathedral. Weakland retired at the age of 75. He was succeeded as Archbishop of Milwaukee in 2002 by Timothy Michael Dolan .

In a public statement in 2002, Weakland admitted that he had an erotic relationship with the then student Paul Macoux in previous years and had transferred money to him from diocese funds. The total was US $ 450,000. In 2009 Weakland published an autobiography called A Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church .
