Republic of the Rascals (Original title: Республика ШКИД , Respublika SCHKID ) is a Soviet feature film directed by Gennady Poloka from 1966 based on the novel of the same name by Grigori Belych and Leonid Panteleev from 1927.

action

In 1922 there were over four million neglected children in Soviet Russia . One of them is the 16-year-old Grigori Tschernych, arrested for several thefts, who is assigned to the newly founded school Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky in Petrograd when young people who have committed criminal offenses are regularly divided . When Grigori arrives there, under the direction of the director Sorokin, there are already 16 children in this educational institution, which is still a construction site. The newcomer gets the nickname Jankel and is greeted with a strong fight.

The first official day of the school's existence is marked by the pupils' resistance to the principal, the cook and the caretaker. The children want to prove that they are in charge here. But the director doesn’t give up and the next day he introduces the faculty, which is also not without problems. The boys have the Russian teacher under control immediately; he sings the hit songs instead of teaching the language. He has not learned that either, so he is expelled from school as a con man, which in turn leads to protests from the students. They then decide to found a state with a prime minister and ministers whose decisions and orders must be followed. The first decision is to protest against the teachers, called parasites. During a joint meeting of the two parties, they decide to negotiate. The director wants to use the newly founded republic for himself and suggests composing a hymn and buying a coat of arms. With that he got the youngsters on his side.

One day two newcomers arrive at the school. The director's mother moves in with him and the new classmate Panteleev, certainly from a good family, is accepted. Sorokin's mother is an old, almost blind woman who bakes plins for her son , which are immediately stolen by the students. This arouses the anger of Panteleev, which ends in a fight, for which he takes responsibility before the director, because he claims to have taken the plins himself. Since he has not betrayed the other children, they are now on his side and bring him something to eat in the dungeon .

The provisional republic founded by the students is to have an official character; this is proposed by the director at a school assembly. Responsible persons should be chosen for all possible areas, e.g. B. class elders, cloakroom elders and also a kitchen elder who will also be responsible for weighing the bread. A council of elders will decide on all these questions and will also take part in the meetings of the pedagogical council on an equal basis.

Since this decision, food is also distributed in the self-administration. But even here there are children who take advantage of the hunger of others. The pupil Slajenow begins to deal with the younger children by giving them half a slice of bread at noon and wanting a whole slice back in the evening. Due to the constant hunger, many get involved in this trade and Slajenow suddenly has large quantities of bread with which he can continue trading. So he also manages that Jankel is voted out of the post of kitchen elder and a student who is a slave to him is installed. As a result, Slajenow can also conduct a lively trade in bread outside of school. But his tricks are uncovered, punished by the students and the director learns that the accused kitchen elder is innocent because he did not see through the system.

One day a particularly serious case is admitted to the educational institution. The other children give him the nickname Mamutschka . However, he only uses his stay to steal metal and clothing in the house at night and then run away from the home in order to turn everything into money. But here he is caught by the director. He has to bring all stolen things back to their place, but Sorokin does not reveal anything. Only Kaufmann recognizes the connections and shows him that he is disappointed. It is probably the first time in his life that Mamutschka experiences warmth from other people and he is beginning to feel comfortable in the home. When the director's mother is not doing well, he asks him to get an oxygen pillow from the pharmacy. For this he gets money, a pass and the Sorokin's jacket, as it is already very cold outside. In town he meets the old members of the gang to which he once belonged. They take everything from him because he cannot defend himself and therefore does not dare to go back to school. At a later point in time, he was given the opportunity to defend home children in a market until he himself was beaten to hospital and wrote a newspaper about his courageous act. The students and their principal visit Mamutschka in the hospital and take him back into their ranks.

criticism

The Berliner Zeitung wrote about this film:

“This film is episodic. He tries to depict the process of development in typical situations. The story is told with a lot of humor in order to discover the serious, even in the un serious. Sometimes, however, the film goes a little too far. "

The lexicon of international films means that the moving content of the film is impaired by a formally inconsistent design.
