Reto Wyss (rower)

Reto Wyss (born May 22, 1952 in Alchenstorf ) is a former Swiss rower . In the lightweight - One he was twice (unofficial) world champion.

In lightweight rowing, FISA championships were held from 1974 to 1984 ; it was not until 1985 that these championships were officially known as the World Rowing Championships. At the first edition of the FISA championships in 1974, Reto Wyss took third place in the one behind the American William Belden and the Dutch Harald Punt . In 1975 Wyss won the title in front of the Austrian Raimund Haberl and William Belden.

Since lightweight rowing was not Olympic in the 1970s, a lightweight rower only had a chance of participating in the Olympics if he competed with the heavier rowers. The only 1.76 m tall Reto Wyss competed in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal with the Swiss double scull and finished eighth, i.e. second in the B final. At the 1976 World Championships, he also did not reach the final in lightweight rowing. In 1977 Wyss focused again on the lightweight single and won his second title. After a fifth place in the one in 1978 , he was able to win medals in team boats over the next two years: in 1979 bronze with the lightweight four without a helmsman and in 1980 together with Kurt Steiner bronze in the lightweight double scull. After a fourth place in the double scull in 1981 Wyss ended his career.

After the introduction of the official world championships, Wyss tried again to make a comeback and took eleventh place in the lightweight single at the 1987 rowing world championships .
