The Richland Township is located in eastern Iowa around 20 km west of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois . The Wisconsin border is around 22 miles north.

The Richland Township is located in the north-central part of Jackson County and is bordered by Dubuque County in the extreme northwest . Within Jackson County, the Richland Township is bordered to the north by Prairie Springs Township , to the northeast by Tete Des Morts Township , to the east by Bellevue Township , to the southeast by Jackson Township , to the south by Perry Township and to the southwest Farmers Creek Township and to the west to Otter Creek Township .
