Richmond ( English Richmond Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district uMgungundlovu in the province of KwaZulu-Natal .
The administrative headquarters of the parish is in the city of Richmond . Andrew Ragavaloo is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.
The parish is named after Charles Lennox , the fourth Earl of Richmond , father-in-law of Sir Peregrine Maitland, governor of the Cape Colony from 1844 to 1847. The parish covers an area of 1256 square kilometers.

Richmond is located in the south of the district about 40 kilometers from Pietermaritzburg , the provincial capital. In the north the municipality borders on Msunduzi and in the west on Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma . East of the municipality is Mkhambathini and south Ubuhlebezwe and uMdoni .

In 2011 the community had 65,793 inhabitants. 95.2% of them were black, 2.6% white, 1.1% Indians or Asians and 0.9% colored .
The first language was 84.1% isiZulu , 5.1% English, 2.5% isiXhosa , 2.1% Sesotho , 1.1% isiNdebele and 0.8% Afrikaans .
economy
The municipality of Richmond benefits from its strategically good location between Durban and Pietermaritzburg with good connections via the N3 .
The most important economic mainstay is agriculture. The mild climate, the good soil and enough rain offer good conditions for this. Forestry and livestock and poultry farming operated in the community. It is sugar cane grown, tea, citrus and more. Some of the products are also exported.

- Richmond-Byrne and District Museum , a local museum that explains the history of European settlers in the area
