history
The airport opened on October 15, 1927 as the Richard Evelyn Byrd Flying Field , named in honor of the polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . Charles Lindbergh and his Spirit of St. Louis aircraft were guests at the inauguration . The airline Eastern Air Lines (then Eastern Air Transport ) took in 1932 to the first scheduled flights from Byrd Field.
The United States Army Air Corps used the airport from 1942 until the end of World War II , and the infrastructure was expanded during this time. In 1968, further renovation and expansion measures were carried out for $ 2.8 million (the equivalent of $ 20.5 million today). In addition to Eastern Air Lines , National Airlines , Piedmont Airlines and United Airlines also added the airport to their route network.
In 1984 the airport was renamed Richmond International Airport . In 1985, Richmond was one of the first airports to receive a microwave landing system (MLS). While elsewhere exploring the utility of MLS for commercial aviation, the Richmond project emphasized the involvement of general aviation .
The terminal building was expanded in 1995, 2002 and 2007, and a new control tower was inaugurated in 2004.
Airlines and Destinations
In 2017, around 3.7 million passengers used Richmond Airport. The most important airlines were Delta Air Lines , American Airlines , the regional airline ExpressJet Airlines , which flies to the airport exclusively on behalf of other airlines, and the low-cost airlines Jetblue Airways and Southwest Airlines .
