description

Vegetative characteristics

The Riesel-Sedge is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30, sometimes up to 40 centimeters. It forms runners and grows in small, loose clumps . The dark green leaves are flat in cross section and around 4 mm wide.

Generative characteristics

The Riesel Sedge is a variegated sedge. There is a male, stalked and two to four separated, long-stalked and overhanging female spikelets . These become up to 1 cm long. The lowest bract is at least as long as the inflorescence. The elliptical, lenticularly compressed tubes are only slightly annoying and indistinctly triangular in cross-section. The single flowers are three-colored .

The species chromosome number is 2n = 58 or 60.

Occurrence and subspecies

There are two subspecies:

  • Carex magellanica subsp. irrigua (Wahlenb.) Hiitonen
  • Carex magellanica subsp. magellanica

Carex magellanica is in southern South America in Argentina and Chile and on the Falkland Islands by the subspecies Carex magellanica subsp. magellanica represented. In the northern hemisphere it occurs in the subspecies Carex magellanica subsp. irrigua circumpolar before. Here it is distributed submeridional-subalpine to arctic.

In Central Europe, the Riesel-Sedge almost exclusively inhabits high alpine bogs , especially at altitudes between 1000 and 2000 meters. In the Allgäu Alps in Vorarlberg near the Kalbelesee on the Hochtannberg it rises up to 1660 m above sea level. Outside the Alps , it occurs in Central Europe only in the Bavarian Forest and in the lime-free low mountain ranges of the Czech Republic and Slovenia ; but it is also absent here in large areas. Overall, it is very rare in Central Europe .

Carex magellanica subsp. irrigua grows in mesotrophic, lime-poor intermediate bogs and bog forests. It is a territorial species of the subalpine Caricetum fuscae, but also occurs in societies of the Rhynchosporion association. The Riesel Sedge grows on lime-free , acidic, peaty soils that should be wet and cool.
