Robert Koren (born September 20, 1980 in Radlje ob Dravi ) is a Slovenian football player . The midfielder has been under contract with the Australian football club Melbourne City since summer 2014 .
Career
society
Koren began his football career with the Slovenian third division club NK Dravograd , where he played between 1996 and 2001. Through good performances, first division clubs became aware of the attacking midfielder. So in the summer of 2001 there was a change to Audience Celje . There Koren had his first national successes, but missed a title several times with his team. In the 2002/03 season they played for the championship until the end, but had to be satisfied with second place behind NK Maribor . In the same year the team reached the final of the Slovenian Cup. Here the team Olimpija Ljubljana had to admit defeat. Due to the good results of the previous year, Celje was allowed to participate in the qualification for the UEFA Cup in 2003/04 . This gave Koren the first chance to show itself internationally. There they secured a place in the first round of the competition with a 7-2 and 5-0 win against the Macedonian club Belasica Strumica . However, the team failed after a return leg to Maccabi Haifa . Koren was used in three of the four games and was able to achieve his first international goal. The good national appearances of the young star at the time did not go unnoticed by teams from abroad either.
Finally, Uwe Rösler , then coach of Lillestrøm SK , lured him into the Norwegian Tippeligaen . Since the season in Norway starts in April and lasts until October, Koren switched before the end of the Slovenian game year. At Lillestrøm, Koren developed into one of the best players in the league. At that time he was repeatedly compared to the Slovenian soccer idol Zlatko Zahovič . In 2006 the midfielder was honored by the fans with the Kniksenprisen for the best midfielder of the past season. Meanwhile, the first English clubs, such as Leeds United and Manchester City , tried to lure the offensive player to the island. However, a transfer came about during the winter break of the 2006/07 season.
On January 4, 2007, Koren signed with the then English second division club West Bromwich Albion . With the help of the Bosman judgment , he enforced this change. Two days later he made his debut in the baggies dress in the third round of the FA Cup . Koren scored his first goal for West Bromwich on May 6 in a 7-0 win over Barnsley FC . It was the last day of the season. The club was qualified for the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League by placing it accordingly . In the semifinals they prevailed on a return leg against Wolverhampton Wanderers , but had to admit defeat in Derby County 0-1 in the final . So the ascent was missed. Koren seriously injured his eye while preparing for the 2007/08 season. In the meantime it was not clear whether his eyesight could decrease significantly. As a result, he missed the league opener, but then made his comeback in the League Cup against Peterborough United at the end of August. In September, the technically good player signed a new two-year contract.
At the end of the season, West Bromwich secured first place in the Football League Championship and thus direct promotion to the Premier League. Koren made his debut in England's top division on Matchday 2 of the 2008/09 season against Everton on August 23, 2008. The midfielder scored his first two goals in the Premier League in a 3-0 win against Middlesbrough FC . On January 17, 2009, he secured victory for his team with a one-two punch in the second half. During the winter break, there was speculation that Korens would leave Fulham . However, the transfer failed. On May 17, Koren was released from West Bromwich Albion after the club failed to take advantage of the option to renew his contract.
On August 13, 2010, he moved to Hull City on a free transfer. There he signed a two-year contract with the option of a third year. A day later he was substituted on for Will Atkinson against Millwall FC .
In August 2014, Koren moved to Melbourne City . He was given a two-year contract until June 30, 2016.
National team
Koren made his debut in the Slovenian national team on April 2, 2003 in the qualifier for the 2004 European Championship in Portugal. At that time, Bojan Prašnikar appointed him to the national team and offered him in his first international match in the starting lineup. The game was won 4-1. Only in the 85th minute was Koren exchanged for Mladen Rudonja . In the following years, the offensive player often only played the role of the spectator. With Nastja Čeh , Amir Karić , Miran Pavlin , Goran Šukalo and Zlatko Zahovič , the competition in the midfield was very strong. Only over time did Koren develop into a top performer and an important pillar in the team structure. He has since been appointed captain of the Slovenes by national coach Matjaž Kek . In 2010 he was appointed to the squad for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa . In the first group game against Algeria , he scored the 1-0 winner for Slovenia . This was the Slovenian’s first victory at a World Cup.
