Rock of Ages , subtitled The Band in Concert , is a double album by the Canadian - American folk and country rock group The Band . It is the band's fifth official album and their first live album . Was added Rock of Ages from 28 to 31 December 1971 at New York City's Academy of Music. It was released on September 15, 1972 on the Capitol Records label . The album not only received mostly positive reviews, it is now often counted among the best live albums of all time. In the US Billboard album charts, at number 6, it also achieved a far better ranking than its rather disappointing predecessor Cahoots .

Capitol decided to release two of the Rock of Ages songs as singles . In September 1972, Don't Do It appeared with the live version of Rag Mama Rag as the B-side . The single made it to number 34 in the Billboard charts. In February 1973, Caledonia Mission came onto the market, but failed because it entered the chart. B-side was (I Don't Want to) Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes .

On May 8, 2001, Capitol released Rock of Ages as a double album on CD, the first CD containing the original album and the second a series of previously unreleased bonus tracks that had also been created at the concerts. Bob Dylan can be heard as a guest musician on four of these tracks, taken from the December 31st show .
